Square Enix Inc., publisher of Square Enix games in North America, has licensed Emergent Game Technologies' Gamebryo engine for an unannounced project.
Square's secret title is "part of Square Enix’s efforts to grow its business further in all major global markets," according to a statement.
The licensing agreement will allow Square Enix access to Emergent's technology worldwide. Square Enix will reveal more details on the game at an unspecified later date.
The majority of Emergent's clients are based in the West. Capcom, Cave Online, Ignition, Gamemare and others are are among the Japan-based companies that license Gamebryo.
Square Enix's Gamebryo title appears to be a cross-platform project, as Emergent said that the engine's Floodgate multi-core, multiplatform development solution was a "major" factor in Square Enix's choice of middleware.
Gamebryo is also used in games such Civilization Revolution, Bully, and as the basis for Bethesda Softworks' highly-customized Elder Scroll's IV: Oblivion engine.
well, FFXI was sort of a huge free-roaming game (in mmo terms that is), so it's easy to see why sqnx going with gamebryo. or it could be another FF game. I'm hoping it's something more...evolutionary (for lack of a better word), but we'll see. guessing is useless 'til you see screens.
