Square Enix's North American and European divisions are the latest to sign a deal with Valve's burgeoning Steam digital distribution and community platform.

Valve said Tuesday that the first Square Enix game to be available to Steam users will be the Unreal Engine 3-powered role-playing game, The Last Remnant. It will release on Steam on April 9, days after the PC version arrives at retail.

Square Enix will continue to add games to its Steam offerings, Valve said in a statement. The digital distribution service boasts 15 million users worldwide.

Square Enix Inc. CEO John Yamamoto stated, "...Steam is one of the many steps we are taking to increase accessibility for fans in North America and PAL territories."

Valve is making major headway in striking deals with the biggest PC game publishers. Steam's publisher roster includes (but is not limited to) 2K Games, Activision, EA, THQ, Sega, PopCap and Ubisoft, in addition to large and small independent developers.

Update: Valve updated its announcement saying European territories are also included in the agreement.

Although not a fan of Final Fantasy (the franchise went sour for me after 7) there is a very good chance FF XIII will appear on the PC now.

More good news for Valve/Steam.

I hope some other games in the Sqaure Enix back catalog will start to appear on Steam in the near future, as well as the newer offerings... Here's hoping for a Final Fantasy VII or VIII revisit, before the next big FF game. :D
