Eidos will retain its branding and continue to run as an independent operation following Square Enix’s £84 million acquisition of the British publisher last week.
Phil Rogers will continue as CEO of Eidos, which is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Square Enix Holdings, and will report directly to Yoichi Wada, president and CEO of Square Enix.
“Eidos will continue to focus on delivering on the clear strategy to leverage the company’s franchises and develop world class games,” the company said in a statement.
Last week Square Enix revealed global sales figures for its biggest franchises, including those acquired following its buyout of Eidos. The company’s newly acquired Tomb Raider and Hitman franchises have sold 30 million and eight million units respectively, figures that pale in comparison to Final Fantasy’s 85 million sales and Dragon Quest’s 47 million.
“This is an exciting beginning to what I believe will be an incredible journey," said Wada. "I am very happy that Phil Rogers has agreed to lead Eidos in what I see as an international marriage between our two companies, a marriage that will give birth to great things. Eidos is a content rich company and a culturally significant business to the Square Enix group.”
Rogers added: “This is a watershed moment for Eidos. We have the backing of an incredible company which believes in our strategy and our people. In the Square Enix group, we have a parent company, which I have held in high respect for many years, with their meticulous level of perfection and unyielding directive to never compromise on quality. We have an incredible opportunity to truly deliver on our creative vision, this is a new chapter for Eidos.”
They appear to count the 8 main series Tomb Raider games, and the Anniversary remake, and not the GBA games or PC expansions.
But what is being counted for Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest? We don't know. Using Wiki (yes i know) I get to just over 40 million for Final Fantasy using the main series, but a fair few are just figures for Japan. Even with worldwide sales, I'm not sure we would get to 85 million, so they must count the likes of X-2, Tactics, the re-releases and the Compilation of FFVII stuff.
Which is probably going to be reaching 30 titles. Little wonder then the sales dwarf that of Tomb Raider, let alone Hitman, which boasts just 4 in it's series.
I am very excited to read that this is a merger more than a corporate takeover.
Hopefully we can see the eidos franchises come out a little more polished from here on out.
Does it mean they'll make a TR that isn't full of bugs?
