Square Enix is being sued for allegedly deceiving 100,000 Final Fantasy XI customers by concealing fees and penalties.
The lawsuit alleges that the publisher "lied about or concealed its monthly fees, penalties for late payments, interest, restrictions and other things that should have been fully disclosed at points of purchase," reports the Courthouse News Service.
The plaintiff is seeking $5 million in damages for alleged unfair business practices, false advertising and unjust enrichment.
There's late payments?
I thought it was if you don't pay then you don't play, simple.
I didn't pay in April. So I wasn't able to play. When I went back on, there was no late payment due. I have no idea what this is talking about. Perhaps it's a late payment specifically for Americans.
I don't think so, because it just wouldn't make much sense when it could easily be applied to Europe as well.
Here is what I got from the User Agreement, from the site itself:

(c) Late Fees and SEI Rights.
In the event that you are late in paying any Subscription Fee due hereunder, or refuse to pay any credit card or other applicable bill containing a Subscription Fee charge (such that SEI incurs fees, penalties, or other expenses as a result thereof), SEI shall be entitled to charge you a late fee at the annual rate maximum allowed by applicable laws, of all amounts due and owing, charged on a monthly basis for so long as you remain delinquent in your payment obligations. SEI shall further be entitled to pass through to you, for prompt payment by you, any and all fees, penalties, or other expenses charged to SEI by any credit card company, bank, collection agency, or any other company or institution as a result of your failure to timely pay all amounts due under this Agreement, together with a 10% administrative fee.
I suppose there are late fees, but they're not hidden. I read the User Agreement. I suppose that gobshite that's complaining didn't, as is usual as we all skim through them wanting to play a game.
Goes to show we should read them. Who knows what we're agreeing to?
$5,000,000/100,000 customers = $50 each. I dunno what the fees are though, so I have no idea whether this is a lot or a little, relative to the monthly subscription.
Anyway, this is pretty bad press coming so closely after the announcement of their next MMORPG, FFXIV.
Your math is wrong.($5 million - $4 million in legal fees) /100k players = $10 per player
I've never had a penalty for late payment, beyond trying to remember my PlayOnline password.
