2Star Wars Galaxies to go offline in December
Sony Online Entertainment and LucasArts have announced that MMORPG Star Wars Galaxies' servers will be switched off on December 15. All services related to the game - including the trading card game - will cease, apparently making way for BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic. An SOE statement regarding the decision read: "We are extremely grateful to all of the SWG fans. We have had the rare opportunity to host one of the most dedicated and passionate online gaming communities and we truly appreciate the support we've received from each and every one of you over the course of the past eight years." The statement went on to hint at an apocalyptic event to close the curtains on the game: "We also plan to go out with a bang with a galaxy-ending in-game event in December and hope to see you all there."

2So if you cash in your 45 free days on august 31st that should take you to October 15th for the final 2 free months. Might have to drop in for one last look around.
It's had a long life, but it's still sad that Galaxies is shutting down, especially has it's due to a license ending, rather than a matter of revenue problems and whatnot. Raph Koster (one of the original designers of the game) has written a short piece on his blog that notes that Galaxies was important for the fact it was mainstream and a sandbox-based MMOG. And that it introduced dancing. "It may have been the biggest and best contribution," he says, remarkably.
