LucasArts and RPG mavericks BioWare confirmed a formidable entry into the MMORPG genre with Star Wars: The Old Republic, during a press event on Tuesday.
The MMORPG was presumably a major factor in EA's decision to buy BioWare for $860 million back in 2007.
Rumors have been swirling for years regarding a BioWare Star Wars MMO, with EA CEO John Riccitiello confirming as much at E3 in July.
BioWare Austin is developing the title. It has only been announced for PC.
It will be BioWare's first MMORPG. No release date has been announced.
There are 12 full-time writers committed to The Old Republic's story, and in typical BioWare fashion, story will play a key role in the MMORPG, according to IGN.
The creative director on the project is James Ohlen, who's credited on titles including Jade Empire, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate.
BioWare co-founder Ray Muzyka said that the company has been wanting to make an MMO for a decade, but was waiting for the right partners and the right IP. And Star Wars is about as strong as an IP can get.
Thanks to IGN for the pic.
What?? SOE's not doing it???
How many times have we heard the tag WoW killer attached to a MMORPG, wait till theres at least gameplay vids or some sort of media then feel free to start throwing the term around
WoW-Killer. A term thrown about with a lot of carelessness. However, consider the money and advertising of EA, the well-known pedigree of Bioware, and the already established franchise not just of Star Wars, but of the KOTOR line specifically. I got to say, "WoW-killer". Yeah, maybe, just maybe.
By the time this game comes out (a long time from now), I'd expect Blizzard to have announced its next MMO--so just "killing" WoW might not be the only thing competitors should be concerned with.
What do people mean by WoW killer? Do they mean SWToR will have more subscribers than WoW, or that it'll be of higher quality than WoW? I don't think any MMO, better or not, will have a larger subscriber base than WoW does. I think WoW was just a perfect storm (as I belive the same with Halo in relation to console FPSs) and we won't see another MMO with such a dominating subscription level as WoW does now. Once the market gets flooded with quality MMOs, it'll be like any other genre in gaming now.
