Writing for Edge today, SCEA's VP of product marketing Scott Steinberg outlines his vision for PS3's future, and the benefits he believes will drive it to market dominance.

In a Keynote, he covers the benefits Sony will be promoting to consumers this Holiday season. They include PS3's Blu-ray drive, first party games, PSN's increasingly diverse product portfolio and community features.

Steinberg writes, "In the next few years, you’re going to start to see us separate from the herd. Some of the other platforms are going to look very dated because their life spans are so much shorter than ours."

He adds, "If you’re a competitor I’ve got bad news for you because we’ve got some absolute blockbusters that are in the works, some of them new IP, some of them existing IP, that we’re building specifically for the PS3

"From a competitive standpoint our competitors are going to have a tougher road now then even in 2008. But for PlayStation 3 consumers, it means more quality and more choice."

Here is Steinberg's full Keynote

Sony seems to be starting to deliver with LBP, Resistance 2 and soon Killzone 2. Let's see how much of these claims are actually going to become true.

gyak's picture

BOTTOM LINE: (sorry Kim)
Sony may be an arrogant dinosaur but LBP will deliver. Just check the new "Colossus" and "Tetris" videos and you know what I'm saying.
I'm not sure about sales statistics and predictions -- to be honest I don't really care about this so-called "war" -- and I know that this weekend I won't quarrel with any of you over console brands. I'll be too busy playing Disgaea DS and Wipeout HD. ;)

Ozzman_79's picture

I'll believe Sony will deliver with LBP when 1)-I am entertained for hours and hours playing it and 2)-I see sales figures in the millions telling me many other are enjoying the same thing I am. Until then, saying it will delilver, based on some movies and demos, is just believing the endless amount of hype coming out for this game.. MOVIES deliver by watching videos, games do not.

Heres a quick question how many "system sellers" does microsoft really have left ? After gears of war 2 and fable nothing really thats why at e3 all they showed was multiplatform games why would u show mostly multi platform games to showcase your system? think about it after those two they have nothing but third party which come to both systems meanwhile sony still has are u listening Grand Turismo,Twisted Metal,God of War 3, Syphon Filter, Resistance 2, MAG,little big planet , Heavenly sword 2,Ratchet and Clank, Infamous,Killzone and many more way to many to list xbox is failing and they know it there boosting there sales now out of complete desperation price cut and crazy ass advertising hoping many ppl will join in on the "X"perience b4 there bubble bursts they didnt plan ahead they try to buy exclusives instead of making them and now its failing bc third partys make more off multiplatform games, xbox is fucked and thats a fact think about it how many exclusives are really coming to the xbox besides fable2 and gears2 now think about wuts in store for the playstation most of the great games on that were all first party .

NickgamertagO1's picture

Halo.

ArronC07's picture

Oh yeah Halo; the most over rated game in history.

NickgamertagO1's picture

Perhaps, but sales are what matter and what, over 8 million people don't think its overrated. I guess when LBP hits 2.5-3.5 million, it'll be the greatest thing ever, but 8 million for Halo??? Clearly overrated.

I would say the hype for it is a bit big, but there's no questioning the game's quality. I'm not saying sales always mean the game is amazing, but 8 million sold, the game can't be THAT overrated, at least not to the people who bought it.

And I'm more talking about a game's ability to move systems, and Halo is about the best game for ANY console when it comes to moving systems. Metal gear gave a modest bump for one month. Halo 3 gave a bit more than a modest bump, and for a bit longer than 1 month. (Sorry to keep bringing MGS4 up, but it was supposed to be one of Sony's biggest exclusives that was supposed to help move systems, hell, it was even packed in with the console basically giving the game away for free and still failed to have more than a mild/moderate consoles sales boost).

And maybe the argument could be made that Halo is the only good game on xbox so that's why it sells so well, but that argument can only be made for the xbox 1 since it did lack many top quality games (it had a handful), but the 360 has many high quality, game of the year caliber games, but Halo still stands above ALL next gen games as the best selling game (not counting Wii's controller bundle wii play since I'm sure that's sold like 50 million copies by now). I think CoD4 may have passed it up, but that's on 2 systems, maybe an unfair comparison. Any one got the official numbers on Halo 3 compared to Cod 4 mulit???

The problem with your logic is that MS continually outsells the PS3 when games hit both systems. 3rd party titles go better on the 360 then the PS3. In addition. According to NPD the 360 is waxing the PS3 in software sales. The attach rate is also higher on the 360. In addition, hardware sales have spiked in almost every country since the price drop. There is nothing to indicate the 360 is dying. In addition, MS has sold more software on XBOX live then all PS3 titles combined. The PS3 needs to make a big push in it's install base or all the exclusives in the world won't matter. I would never count Sony out but clearly counting MS out is short sited in this generation.

rydamgw's picture

Sony has the right to be arrogant they will win the console race microsoft is running low on exclusives they only have 2 1st party studios you know, now all 3rd partys are starting to go multiplatform and sony has like 20 1st party studios who all make great games Sony is future proof while xbox was only made to hold out at 4 years at the max this time next year ps3 will be way ahead of microsoft and ill be right here to say i told u so .

SteelDog's picture

lol. Typical Sony hype. What do you exect Sony to say? "Gee...we are getting are butts kicked in this generation....and we feel we should just give up. I don't see us over taking any of our competitors in 2009". Right.......his opinion means nothing. He is trying spin a positive outcome. By this time next year the PS3 could be done or doing exactly what he thinks. He doesn't know anymore then the rest of us how this will turn out. His "Warning" is being laughed out collectively right now by MS and Nintendo.

ArronC07's picture

I guess coming second is quite humiliating for them.

NickgamertagO1's picture

You mean second, behind MS right? ;)

ArronC07's picture

Errr no.

NickgamertagO1's picture

Ok, well then 3rd behind microsoft. ^^

ArronC07's picture

Errr no.

tirminyl's picture

In the US ;-)

ArronC07's picture

Ucht. Sony just shut up and deliver, it really is that simple.

German's picture

I'm guessing after seeing all the comments that consumers (myself included) have come to expect less and less from Sony after so many broken promises. They still feel king of the hill and seriously need to show a little humility in their statements if they want to regain gamers' trust.

gyak's picture

Well Sony, we'll wait and see. In the meantime just stop doing these stupid empty keynotes, thanks. They just infuriate people. (Oh and if we're here... Dear MS and Nintendo, just do the same and stop announcing idle news and victories.)

PS. don't you want to make a Hungarian PSN store just to get the hang of concrete things? You know we'd gladly give you our money if we could.

Ozzman_79's picture

More vague, 'wait and see' attitude from Sony, with no concrete details, just talk.. Yes, yes, Sony, I know, "It's coming"....."soon"...."in the next few years"....these are phrases i hear/read a lot of out of the mouths of SCEA execs, yet i rarely see anything materialize. How many delays have HOME and Life with Playstation had over the past while? Now THAT'S bad news.....but not for competitors.

But then again, what exactly do you expect them to say? If they don't talk the big talk to hype their products, who will? Wouldn't except anything else from them.

Huw Jass's picture

"If you’re a competitor I’ve got bad news for you"
Oh yeah? Well I'm a consumer, and I've got some very bad news for you!

lolz! +1

NickgamertagO1's picture

Wow, I haven't seen such Sony bashing (true statements though) in a long time. I think everyone here is pretty right and it seems the time of Sony successfully foolling everyone into just believing their promises, buying theirs systems, only to realize they've been duped. I don't own a PS3, and for many reasons, small game libraray, too few triple A games, (arguably) no system sellers, price, (my) lack of confidence in the bluray format (Digital distribution is the future IMO) but I think one of the biggest reasons for me was stated perfectly by Andre Bobbitt, I have a large friend list on my 360 and they are all on at least every other day. If I were to get a PS3, I'd basically have to make all new "friends" online as none of my friends own a PS3. Some of the people on my list have been on it for up to 5 years since live launched on xbox 1. It'll be a tough road for Sony for sure.

ShamanNY's picture

That is why i like these discourses... i may actually be your exact opposite.

I dont own a 360, most things are multi platform now and they both have equally compelling exclusives (ok i give the box the edge on that one but its close enough).

The small library and too few AAA titles argument doesn't hold much water with me as i can always tap the PS2 library and most AAA are multi platform... heck they may be synonymous
Price dollar for dollar obviously the 360 is cheaper but since there is no arcade PS3 then i think they were similarly priced (the upper 2 SKU) until the latest price drop.

I like blu-ray and all the other hi-def content not in that particular format, Digital distribution IS the future much like wind and solar power... not in the next 5 years.

Ahh the large friend list/installed base/ and live nothing to say about that since in that area 360 kicks ass
but as luck would have it all of MY friends have PS3's

NickgamertagO1's picture

Yeah, I'm not naive enough to think that all gamers are like me, so I'm sure there's a few of you out there ^^

Relatively equal exclusives...fair enough.

I don't know if I'd count BC as PS3 having a large library, but as far as PS3 games, their library is a bit small, but to be fair, it has been out for a year less, but more 3rd party support wouldn't hurt (what's the deal with all the RTSs not coming out on PS3???). Agreed about multiplatform/triple A.
Yeah, the price drop has put the top 360 SKU at the same cost as the bottom PS3 SKU, close enough though.

About DD being the future, I wouldn't be shocked if NEW game releases will be digital rather soon, and HD movie purchases are right around the corner (rental is here, but not purchase, don't get that one).

I guess the 360 having a solid online network for much longer (live is over 5 years old), I naturally have live friends that Sony couldn't have done with the PS2 to the PS3 since the live service for (PS2) really didn't have a dedicated "gamertag" and didn't start until after xbox live came out.

As far as games worth buying a PS3 for for ME, there isn't enough yet. And as you pointed out, most multi platform games have little to no differences on both the consoles so that wouldn't be incentive for me. Exclusives...the PS3's exclusives just aren't quite enough for me to get the system for (personal preferance rules the day).

Andre Bobbitt's picture

Wow, what to think...Well owning a ps3, 360, and wii. I can say my ps3 and wii collect serious dust. I do believe the ps3 is a great system however I have had far fewer great gaming moments on it in comparison to my 360 or even my wii (which is also rather dusty at the moment). The 360 just has a much more diverse games collection then the ps3 and when there are multiplatform releases I always get the 360 version. The reasons being, as lame as some of you may think points (If im gonna play it, I mine as well get some points while Im at it), typically better graphics or smoother framerates in my head to head comparisons, and most importantly LIVE. I hate psn in its current form. Mainly due to the lack of headsets and that most of my friends are on LIVE which I suppose isn't SONY's fault but it is a big draw to LIVE over PSN. I think that Playstation has a lot of work ahead of it for it to take more of my time then my 360 does and that is how I measure how good a system is. IM I PLAYING IT.

NickgamertagO1's picture

I'd have to definitely agree with you on the achievements. My friends and I are constantly comparing achievements (I love that feature, you can really see what kind of gamer your friends, what games they play, and how much they play each game they have) and trying to out-do each other. Being able to display that I have 1000 achievement points in CoD4, or 1000 in Bioshock (no brass balls, forget that), or even Avatar (just kidding) is awesome. Before you could just tell your friends, "Yeah, I finished Mass Effect 5 times and beat it on insane..." just to have them not believe you. Now, you can show it. Kudos to MS for implamenting a great feature.

Oh Lordy! Scott has drunk way too much coffee. Been there 1 year (from Napster natch) and wants the kit to become a home entertainment center before dominating as a successful games machine.

I have Vista Ultimate to record TV shows and series (free unlike Sky +/ PLAY) and I upscale to watch my dvd collection anyhow. So what else have you got, HOME? Please.

This statement is because they cannot lower the price of PS3 this year and GEARS2 is coming to decapitate LBP.

ShamanNY's picture

I agree with you on some counts, (Sony cannot lower prices) but you must understand Blu-ray as a format is a different product than DVD (some would use the word better). Its fine that you upscale, but what sony is interested in finding out from you is if you are gonna continue to upscale (ie continue to buy DVD's) or are you gonna adopt the format.

grognard66's picture

Did we really expect him to say otherwise? It is already too late for Sony to turn things around this generation.

They were saddled with poor design-by-committee decisions, forcing in things like Blu-Ray/Cell from other divisions or people within Sony with their own agenda (desire to make a Japanese PC with a completely different architecture). This resulted in price creep, persistent delays and tepid third-party support due to the small install base, horrible Tech Support and bizarre architecture (why spend more time/money developing for a system with an appreciably smaller install base and attach rate?).

The PS3 is certainly not doomed, but in any other industry such a precipitous drop in market share from one product release to another can only be seen as disastrous. I hope Sony has been chastened by this situation and learns lessons for the PS4. Unfortunately, based on their continued arrogant and bizarre comments I don't think that's the case.

Hector_Camacho's picture

As a gamer, that has been watching the industry this long....I remember how the ps2 beat down the DREAMCAST with only the EMOTION ENGINE of the PS2(remember those demos),it is not the same industry nowadays and not the same market, and to be honest with you all, I believed that the ps3 was more powerfull than my xbox360 and to this day, it has not proven it.And the 360 live service is great! But I still believe the ps3 may be more powerfull than the xbox360, but we as gamers are still waiting, for the promises made by SONY...AND if SONY does not hurries up, we really may not see the full potential of the PS3.....I sometimes feel sorry for the way SONY mishandled the PS3 and how arrogant they where about the competition....

Pug's picture

Thats a lot of talk, with little to back it up... there is nothing here that hasnt been said already... "Blu ray for bigger games", "longer lifecycle" blah blah blah.

Back it up! As a PS3 owner I want you to be telling the truth... but so far you havent delivered.

More lies and sickening arrogance from sony.
