Market Research firm Insight Media has released details of a study that predicts the 3D gaming market is poised to grow from “a handful of 3D-capable displays and a few thousand gamers, to an expected worldwide market of over 40 million 3D-capable displays by 2014.”

“We have played Stereoscopic 3D games for hundreds of hours and can report that the latest technology does not result in eye strain or fatigue,” explained Dale H. Maunu, lead analyst on the report. “Our experience leads us to believe that S-3D gaming is more immersive and compelling than traditional gaming on a 2D screen, and it will help drive 3D adoption.”

Sony recently said that existing PS3 titles could be made playable in 3D form through the release of a system firmware update, though there are no immediate plans to make the move.

At GDC Europe this year Andrew Oliver, co-founder and CEO of Blitz Games, showcased stereoscopic 3D technology saying, ““People ask if 3D is really going to happen, but we're past that now. It's happening. The technology is here.”

I think this guy is living in a fantasy land.
There's a reason why 3D hasn't taken off and until you can get rid of the glasses altogether and have a quality image in 3D than I don't think you are going to see the 40mil displays in only 4 years time.
Yes you may have a crap load of '3D capable' TV's, they actually all will probably be, but whether or not people are using the tech is another story.

I remain incredibly skeptical. I don't think people will want to be wearing headgear all the time, much less rebuy their TVs... though I can see why electronics companies would like to convince us we should. Can only ride that HDTV wave for so long before the market is saturated.

I agree completely. I have to wear glasses all the time as it is. To hell with the idea of having to wear another pair of glasses to play games or watch TV or films.

3D is a gimmick. Always has been. Always will be. This is merely another analyst spouting analyst bollocks.

Again agreed, i don't know why 3D has had such a resurgence in the past few years, its the same technology as years ago.

If they work out a way of doing it without any headgear then it will be a massive success but until then it is just a gimmick
