Grasshopper Manufacture is working on a new action game with unique online functionality enabled by the studio’s new owner GungHo, Suda51 has told us.
The new game doesn’t even have a working title yet, but it is set in the near future and has a tagline to go alongside the game’s key art (pictured above): ‘what the hell are you looking at?’ It has been in development since November, and is currently slated for release next year. It is a brand new IP, and No More Heroes artist Yusuke Kazaki is handling the new game’s visuals.
“Of course it’s an action game and it’ll be on console platforms. We’re considering various console platforms right now,” Suda told us. When asked whether the title will be current or next-gen, he replied: “We’re considering both. Naturally we are interested in developing games for the next-gen platforms. We are investigating the specs and all that right now.”
“This is going to be an action game obviously but the gameplay style is going to differ very much – it’ll be unique,” Suda continued. “This is a title that GungHo Japan and Grasshopper Manufacture is working on together collaboratively so there will be an online feature, because that’s their forte and what they specialise in. On the simplest level it will be social, but the word social is used and misinterpreted a lot these days. GungHo has over ten years of experience in providing online gaming services so that is their strength.”
When asked exactly how the online functionality works, Suda added: “This is a very new style of online feature, so there’s no example from the past.”
Grasshopper Manufacture was recently acquired by GungHo, the online game specialist which has had a huge hit in Japan with Puzzle & Dragons. Fellow Grasshopper Manufacture title Killer Is Dead was also recently confirmed to be arriving on US and EU shores this summer, after Xseed and Deep Silver picked up the rights to publish the game.
