Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two has in the past been accused of being a one-trick pony, as it lays claim to perhaps the biggest videogame franchise of today.
But Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick says that his company's portfolio has profit-driving potential beyond Rockstar's carjacking moneymaker.
"We aren’t giving guidance for 2009 yet," Zelnick told Venture Beat. "But I feel very good that we can deliver on that goal of a profitable enterprise even in non-GTA years."
He said that he's aware of the impression that Take-Two can't turn an annual profit without GTA, because "In a release year for a GTA game, the company would make money. In a non-release year, it wouldn’t."
But he pointed towards Take-Two franchises, particularly owned IP, that have done well for the company. He said that million-plus selling titles like BioShock, Carnival Games, Civilization, Midnight Club, Top Spin and the 2K Sports lineup are some games that can lay a foundation of profitability sans GTA.
"...We do think it is our obligation to deliver a profitable enterprise year in and year out. We took enormous steps to reduce the costs of the company," he added.
