Wii exclusive The Conduit sold just shy of 72,000 units in the US during June, according to NPD data provided to Edge.
The High Voltage developed FPS released in the States on June 23, while the NPD’s June reporting period ran from May 31–July 4.
“In terms of top SKUs, The Conduit placed at number 25,” said an NPD spokesperson, also noting that the game failed to break into the top five selling Wii titles in June.
In recent times the game’s publisher, Sega, has hedged its bets on exploiting the lack of core-focused titles on Nintendo’s platform, but its efforts haven’t been met with blockbuster success. Its M-rated light gun title House of the Dead: Overkill sold 45,000 copies in the US during its release month of February. The following month its violent, stylised action game Madworld debuted with 66,000 sales. Both of these titles were launched earlier in their respective release months than The Conduit.
Following its delayed release earlier this month, The Conduit failed to light up the UK chart, debuting at number 29 on the all formats rankings and at number eight on the Wii chart.
The game currently carries a Metascore of 70, with scores ranging from 40-90. You can read our review here.
We’ve contacted High Voltage and Sega for comment on The Conduit’s performance.
Bollox, I bought the game and all the negative reviews were right!!!
If I remember rightly, 72,000 is only taken from 10 days of US sales data. What is rather worrying though, is that my local Asda & Sainsburys in Stoke still havn't got it in stock yet (that was last Thursday, haven't checked since) if that's endemic of the UK as a whole then that's gonna hurt early sales in the UK.
I'm still picking it up as the review scores go from one extreme to the other & you can always use Gamestations 10 day money back deal if it's pants.
All of the local supermarkets in Stoke on Trent still haven't received any stock of the game!!! Gamestation has got it in for £40 but they do a 10 miles price match and knowing Asda prices, the game will be a lot cheaper than £40.
This can't be good news for the game that's been out 2 weeks now. Maybe Sega have no faith in the casual supermarket shopper picking it up?
The wii is never going to be a fully fledged 'core' machine with a wide selection of core and mature titles. So we just need to accept that.
Bayonetta will not sell "huge" at all cos its just 'another' game.
This didn't sell cos as I always suspected, its crap and drab with no character. Pure and simple
Wrong game in the wrong platform.
Hmmm... CoD:WaW would like a word!
Even still, I expected way more from The Conduit. It's a good game, I really like it. The smear campaign didn't really help either.
I think it's more because of that it looks generic and got bad reviews. They say they're trying to make games for the hardcore, yet what they come up is still a vapid gimmick (like every other Wii game yes this is hyperbole).
MadWorld looked different, got great reviews and didn't sell either, Bayonetta's gonna be a huge hit on the PS3 & 360 and it'll be Sega's wakeup call that they're wasting their time on the Wii, other 3rd parties have already gotten the message
Metroid Prime series, RE series. There are mature games that sell well on the Wii but they're exceptional in quality.
Graphics will always be average on the Wii. So I think people expect more from their "serious" games.
Metroid Prime 3 got great reviews and only moved about 1.5 million units, which is extremely low for a Nintendo published title. And the two Resident Evil Wii titles got fairly average reviews, with Umbrella Chronicles being an on rails shooter, you really sure you want to call those games "exceptional quality", I think the name/brand recognition had much more to do with their sales than quality of the game.
The Conduit not turning out so great and its tepid sales, are both things I predicted a few months back, and it didn't take a genius to see those two things happening with the evidence at hand (quality of the game based on High Voltage game's previous track record and the sales based on how other "mature" targeted Wii only games sold).
I'll make another not so bold, and pretty obvious prediction (that I'm sure will be disputed here), we won't be seeing many Wii exclusive, 3rd party published games which are aimed at the "hardcore" audience. At best you'll see "lite" versions of games which were released on PS3 and 360 (like the forthcoming Dead Space and Dead Rising Wii games).
You forget that Metroid has *always* been a Nintendo published title and has never sold millions of copies. Just because a game is published by Nintendo doesn't mean it'll sell Wii Fit numbers.
I like the latter half of your last point though. And I think Dead Space: Extraction is gonna tank as well. I'm going to buy it for sure, it looks like it'll be a lot of fun, but it's still an HD effort shoehorned into a rail shooter when it could've been a competent TPS on Wii. You'll still see plenty of Wii exclusive hardcore 3rd party games though - that won't stop.
It's not so bad, developers just have to retool their games to the Wii audience
Take Wii Half-Life, for example -

God damn Indrema! You never take a break with your awsome pictures!
Do you see these posts and quickly make them?
Or do you have a whole library of these bad boys already made and ready to be used in any situation you see fit to use them in?
You never know when you'll need to throw up an Half-Life/Animal Crossing pic. People laughed at me, but I knew I'd use it someday.
Thanks, though, I am pretty quick on photoshop. I should write for engadget.
He could've been referring to Resident Evil 4 wii edition, which sold well and had good reviews.
I agree with you though. Other examples of good selling core games on Wii are SW:TFU, CoD:WaW, and those two would certainly agree with your name/brand ascertation.
Its a shame new I.P.s have trouble taking off, but i do have hope for the conduit still. Let's wait and see if it has any legs.
