The EA-owned RPG mavericks at BioWare are employing Simutronic's middleware, HeroEngine, for the upcoming MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic, the companies announced Wednesday.

Simutronics said in a statement the middleware "allows for development in real-time, enabling teams in different geographic locales to build the world and play the game live on the server simultaneously."

BioWare, which is working with LucasArts on the game, has yet to announce a firm release date on the title. So far, it's only slated for PC.

Another high-profile company using the HeroEngine is Bethesda Softworks sister company Zenimax Online Studios, which is implementing the engine in an unnamed MMO.
