Poland-based CD Projekt RED confirmed Tuesday that its million-selling RPG series The Witcher is headed to home consoles in fall 2009.

The console game is dubbed The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf, and will appear on Xbox 360 and PS3, marking CD Projekt RED's first foray into new generation console development. Atari will publish the title.

According to CD Projekt, Rise of the White Wolf will be built "from the ground up" as a console RPG, sporting a new game engine co-developed with Lyon-based Widescreen Games.

“The only thing we’re taking directly from The Witcher is the story; everything else is being created from scratch or significantly reworked to get us to our end goal of delivering the ultimate console RPG," said CD Projekt RED CEO Adam Kicinski. He added that console gamers want "deep, story-driven games."

Seemingly taking a pre-emptive stance against worries that the PC-native RPG series would be "dumbed down" for console masses, co-founder Michal Kicinski stated, “We’re not about to dumb down our games for anyone.

"We want to give players the best games, regardless of platform; it’s important to us that each game plays to the platform’s strengths while treating our players with respect. That was our development philosophy with The Witcher, it’s our philosophy with Rise of the White Wolf, and it’s our philosophy on the other two games in development at CD Projekt RED.

"Anyone concerned that we’re going to somehow offer a shallow RPG simply because we’re working on consoles can stop worrying.”

The Witcher franchise, based on the literary works of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, debuted on PC in 2007, and recently hit the 1 million worldwide sales mark. The title, CD Projekt's development debut, was lauded by critics.

One of my favorite RPG this year and just finished the second play through a couple of weeks ago. Great game, on 360 hope it is even better, but I still prefer the PC. Here's hoping they make it great and uncensored...

This is great news. The RPG scene has been getting better and better on consoles of late, and this just seals the deal. Regarding the comment about direct ports, why on earth would they just port a game like this? That would be one of the worst things they could do to their game. Remember Morrowind on the original Xbox? Yes, it was still a fantastic game--a bad port couldn't change that--but still, the requirements of the game were too much for the Xbox to handle without some recoding, and as a result the game crashed often, glitched up saved files, etc. No, it is better that they rework the game in its entirety for consoles.

Why not just a direct port?

Great news, The Witcher is a fine game that i'm sure will work very well on a joypad. Here's hoping for a sequel on PC, 360 and PS3.
