EA's currently in create-new-IP mode, but the company does plan on turning this new IP into sequelized franchises.

September's Spore launched in September, a game that EA CEO John Riccitiello said is "very much" the basis for a franchise.

He confirmed that two Spore expansion packs are coming over the next six months, "with many more to come."

Riccitiello added, "We've got expansion packs coming, new business models coming. Yes, it's a franchise."

But there are other new properties that EA hopes to capitalize and expand on.

"As for titles like Dead Space and Mirror's Edge, I think you can absolutely expect those titles to come back in one way, shape or form, but they're not likely to be annual sequels," he explained to one analyst during Thursday's earnings call.

"Warhammer Online is a subscription game ... that's going to be monthly," he said, referring to updates.

Riccitiello didn't shy away from exhibiting his belief in maxing out a franchise to its greatest financial potential. He talked about the Pandemic-created franchise, Mercenaries. "[As for] Mercenaries 2--there will be a Mercenaries 3. And if I can have anything to do with it there will be a Mercenaries 10."

Mercenaries 2 sold 1.9 million copies during the fiscal quarter, execs said.

Story originally--and incorrectly--said Mercs 2 sold 1.2 million. Apologies for any confusion.

After playing GTA4, mercs 2 and saints row 2 were absolutely awful in comparison and i barely played either for longer than an hour or so to know i wouldn't get anything out of them for the £80 i paid. So i took both back to Gamestation and got my money back.

I think the reason mercs 2 sold so well was because it was the first 'big' title released after the summer drought, if it was released now with some truely 'big' titles available i doubt it would have achieved such unwarranted high sales.

Please, don't make any more mercenaries games.
I' ve played the demo, and... what can I say? It looked and played terribly. Pure junk.

Mercs2 wasn't great, but it was also decent fun for a few weeks. Graphics were good enough for an open world game and gameplay was varied enough. I could name quite a few games that were much, much worse.

They're going to have to add things to it each time, but by Mercs 10 surely there won't be anything left?

Even if new things are added, the games are likely to worsen with each sequel. I played the demo of Mercs 2 and thought it was too hectic for its own good.

Do you think they have a list of features written on a white board with a time line drawn underneath split into 10 handy segments....?
I love a well executed franchise but thinking so far past your next version (8 times further in fact) is a bit cocky if you ask me. It's like they've already created Mercs.10 and have since chopped it up into smaller pieces to be released annually for the next decade.

"Oh no you didn't!"
