THQ Calls Layoffs "Normal Business"

THQ has confirmed to Next-Gen layoffs at internal development studios Rainbow Studios and Sandblast games.

THQ has confirmed to Next-Gen layoffs at internal development studios Rainbow Studios and Sandblast games.

"This is a normal part of our business as we address the pipeline," THQ corporate spokesperson Julie MacMedan told Next-Gen in a phone interview regarding the layoffs. "It's not really affecting anything in fiscal '09 that Rainbow or Sandblast have announced."

A Tuesday report on trade site Gamasutra cited anonymous sources who said that Rainbow, developer of the MX racing franchise and the commercial hit Cars, laid off around 30 employees in mid-April as they were working on an unannounced game. Sandblast layoffs reportedly occurred this week.

"Basically, there were some people notified that [THQ] is making some changes, and they were let go, but not a significant number of people," the rep added.

At the time of the interview, she said she did not have a specific figure for the number of people laid off.

"[It's] nothing unusual. It's part of the normal course of business," she reiterated. "We have a long term project plan, and as that changes or shifts, we look at who's working on what in the studios and sometimes we'll move a team into another project, or sometimes we'll look at the skillsets they have and the projects we have for them, and sometimes there's not a match."
