The Japanese publisher behind the popular gaming magazine Famitsu has revealed total life-to-date sales of both Wii and PlayStation 3.
According to Enterbrain (via Kotaku), as of December 13, Nintendo’s Wii has sold just under ten million units at 9,048,012 since the Japanese launch. Sony and its PlayStation 3 have sold 4,020,563.
In December last year Enterbrain reported that 2.6 million PS3s and 7.5 million Wii consoles had been sold in Japan.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii made an impressive start in Japan, shifting 422,000 copies during its first 24 hours of availability. The title has since gone on to sell well over one million units.
Why feel sorry for MS? They're an arrogant company and a lot of times have been more pathetic in their remarks this gen than Sony. F**k em. They deserve to rot somewhere at least
No they don't deserve to rot. MS have delivered some great games to the market over recent years. Lets face it, the biggest shake up to the market in the past decade was the introduction of the Xbox. They actually gave gamers more choice and offered titles that either the GC couldn't have handeled or the PS2 wouldn't have dared to take on board.
Microsoft have done more than enough to warrant the same level of respect among the games industry as Sony and Nintendo. Yes Sony owned the decade and Nintendo have managed to build themselves up into the bohemoth that we all know know, but between these two extremes the Xbox has quietly and convieniently found a secure place where it can continue to cater for its specific audience. (and their online service is brilliant)
Oh and for any nay sayers out there, I am not a fan boy so please don't make any assumptions.
I kinda feel sorry for MS; they are after all an American company and many of the games on their console are built with the western hobbyist gamer in mind. No wonder they don't want the gaming press to openly publish their sales figures. Everyone knows that its struggled against its competitors especially in the east.
Gee, I do wonder why Microsoft won't show us their Xbox 360 sales numbers.
To Microsoft's credit, they have pretty good world wide sales considering they have sold feck all in Japan.
True, true. I think that has something to do with the fact that MS unlike their rivals, haven't wasted anytime on chasing unappreciative audiences or non existant demogrphics. They are comfortable where they are and the gamers that they are catering for certainly seem to be appreciative of their [MS] commitment to developing and distributing consistently brilliant titles.
Given the massive success of the blue ocean strategy pursued by Nintendo with Wii, it is difficult to accept that they have been 'wasting time on chasing unappreciative audiences or non existant demographics'.
