Hi-Rez Studios, developer of Global Agenda, has announced that it is to release a new game in the much-loved Tribes series later this year.
Announced ahead of this weekend’s PAX East conference in Boston, Tribes: Ascend is an online multiplayer shooter, developed using Unreal Engine 3, in what Hi-Rez is billing the spiritual successor to Tribes 2.
The studio acquired the rights to the series last October, and announced Tribes Universe, a large-scale online shooter in a persistent world, but has chosen to release Tribes: Ascend first.
Hi-Rez COO Todd Harris said: “Before Halo, before Modern Warfare, and before Battlefield, there was Tribes. Fans appreciate the game’s essence – athletic FPS combat combined with teamwork and strategy.
“The community has been waiting for a multiplayer shooter that is the modern successor to Tribes 2. Tribes: Ascend is that game.”
Tribes: Ascend is set for a late 2011 release for PC and Xbox 360, though Hi-Rez says other platforms are being considered.
