Turbine claims that its decision to adopt a free-to-play model for Dungeons And Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited has paid off in a major way.
The company announced last June that the formerly subscription-only MMO title would be transitioning to a free-to-play game following the release of digital upgrade Eberron Unlimited.
While DDO’s former subscription structure was dropped, a new DDO store offers players the chance to purchase additional game content and items via microtransactions, while a DDO VIP program offers unlimited access to all premium content for a monthly price.
According to Turbine, the game has gained over one million new players since Eberron Unlimited launched in September 2009, and its paid subscriber base has more than doubled, growing the franchise’s revenue over 500 per cent.
“The response from players to DDO Unlimited has been nothing short of phenomenal,” said Jim Crowley, president and CEO of Turbine. “We’ve known all along how great this game is and by implementing an innovative new model that put the players in charge of how they pay and play DDO Unlimited, we’ve successfully expanded our reach and injected new energy into the game.”
