Ubisoft Acquires Vancouver Studio

Paris-based publisher grows as others make cuts.

Ubisoft has been one of the few major game publishers that continues to expand, while others are making cuts.

Just days after announcing the acquisition of a Brazilian studio, Ubisoft on Tuesday said it has acquired Vancouver-based Action Pants, the Paris, France-based publisher's first studio on the North American West Coast.

Action Pants was founded in 2006 by Simon Andrews, Nik Palmer and Omar Al-Khafaji, Ubisoft said in a statement. The studio, located in the Yaletown area, employs over 110 game developers.

Action Pants garnered recognition in recent years for being a top employer in the province, and a desirable place to work.

The studio's first release will be a sports game exclusively for Wii, slated for release this year. Ubisoft said the title will "expand upon Ubisoft's recent success in the sports genre with the Shaun White Snowboarding franchise."

Christine Burgess-Quemard, executive director of worldwide production studios at Ubisoft said in a statement, "We have been looking closely at Vancouver for some time, as we wished to set up a presence in what is one of the industry's biggest talent pools."
