Ubisoft Slashes Red Steel 2 Projections

French publisher halves initial projection of one million units ahead of the gameĆs March launch.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has said that the company has cut its expectations of its Wii MotionPlus action game, Red Steel 2.

Originally estimated to sell around one million units, Ubisoft has now slashed its own sales projections of the Wii exclusive, which is currently due to be released this March.

Speaking during a financial conference call last week (via Total Video Games), Guillemot explained, “For Avatar we said 2.5 million units and our expectations were more in the 3.5-4 million [region]. On Red Steel we decided, in our expectations, to divide the quantity by two and previously we had around a million."

Ubisoft downsizing its expectations of a Wii title is the latest publisher reaction to the Wii market. Recently Capcom France exec Antoine Seux said that early Wii sales of Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles are below what was expected from the latest title in the series.

Last week Ubisoft said that sales targets for its third-quarter and full-year 2009-10 have been revised downwards to €495 million and around €860 million respectively, from the previously announced figures of €540 million and €1,040 million. The firm also delayed several key titles, including Splinter Cell: Conviction.
