Ubisoft is suing North Carolina-based Optical Experts Manufacturing, the company that it contracted to reproduce copies of Assassin’s Creed for PC, for copyright infringement, breach of contract and negligence, after one of the company’s employees allegedly posted a pirated copy of the game on the Internet six weeks before its release.
According to GameSpot, Ubisoft filed suit against OEM last month for failing to abide by numerous security measures, and even claims that OEM admitted to causing the leak by not meeting its security commitments.
Ubisoft says that the leaked edition of the game was downloaded more than 700,000 times, costing the publisher millions of dollars, and that the pirated version of the title contained a bug, a factor that caused "irreparable harm" to the company’s reputation.
Ubisoft is seeking damages and legal fees in excess of $20 million.
It feels so refreshing to hear about a court case that makes sense.
Finally...
This is what the courts are for. A real case against a real problem. None of this "made up" stuff that others like RIAA like to do.
I hope UBI Soft wins!
Its about time someone did this. Most day and date leaks are widely known to come from disk replicators. This is the first time that someone has been caught red-handed and with an open & shut case, Ubi is right to sue in order to set an example.
I often scratch my head when I read about lawsuits but this one feels right. If you can't trust your employes to not leak code or builds you shall have it coming. It's to bad that the whole company has to take the punch but they are 100% responisble for what their workers do.
It´s a darn shame. Everytime I hear about leaks from professionells that go up on Bit Torrents or other file sharing places it pisses me off! Why is it so hard to be a law abiding citizen?
