UK Xbox 360 sales rose by 32 percent over the weekend following Microsoft’s move to cut the console’s price last Friday, retail monitor GfK Chart-Track has told Edge.

Sony’s PS3 saw an eight percent drop in sales compared to the previous weekend, while sales of Nintendo’s market-leading Wii rose by three percent.

The news comes just days after the platform holder reduced the price of its entire range of 360 consoles in Europe, further undercutting its rivals’ hardware offerings. It also reflects a similar jump in 360 sales witnessed in March following the console’s previous price cut.

On Monday Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360's European installed base had broken six million units.

Total worldwide 360 sales currently stand at around 20 million units.

(Just keeding.) It's just fun to have at least one gung-ho article on the 360 per day.

But, in all this excitment, one important piece has been missing for days.....................Kim : (

On what planet is a 32% increase in sales not significant??? Keep in mind though the 360 is experience sales spikes even in Japan at the moment. I would say the "temporary" sales spike across the board (in all markets) is impressive. However, this all means nothing if this doesn't last for more then a week.

I guess the use of the term rocket is really what I was referring to. 1/3 increase in sales is significant sure, but I've read reports of the PS3 having sales increases with drops upwards of 100% or more (which to be fair, was 100% over very little to start with) and also the 360 having reports of much larger than 32% sales increases in other territories, I just didn't think "Rocket" was the best term to describe moderately high percentage increases.

And you nailed it with your last sentence. I can see large increases in sales initially with those increases dropping after a while but still being higher than it was before the price drop.

Don't know if I'd consider 32% THAT impressive of an increase. I would say its a solid increase.

Unfortunately, Chart-Track told us: “As a rule we don't release actual hardware sales to the public domain, but we are happy to every now and again reveal percentage rises.”

Chart-Track need to join the 21st century.

If I am not wrong, Chart-Track and such are making their profits by selling their statistics to industry clients. If you want to get all the info, you have to pay for it. When they give you small bits of information publicly, it's only for publicity, to attract more industry clients on the long run. So, if they would give all they got for free in the public domain, they wouldn't join the 21st century... They'd just go bust ;)

Is that how NPD work as well?

XBox360 price drop not affecting Wii confirmed.

ArronC07's picture

Or the PS3 really.

Kenology's picture

The PS3 is down 8%. If this continues then I'd say that 360 price drop is making it an alternative to a more expensive PS3. Wii actually went up, so the 360 price cut had no effect on it.

ArronC07's picture

The PS3 has been outselling the 360 in the UK year, only we aren't allowed to know by how much as Chart Track seem to be very secretive about the numbers. 8% drop and 32% increase is meaningless if we don't know what the numbers of units being sold are. If we assume that the whole 8% drop is because of the 360 and the 32% increase is that 8% buying the 360 instead of the PS3 it doesn't really look that impressive does it? It would mean that the PS3 is outselling the 360 still by a wide margin. Of course we don't know because its a secret!

NickgamertagO1's picture

Good point, depending on average sales per month, an 8% drop for PS3 could still result in more consoles sold per month than the 360 at a 32% increase. Well, you could figure it out through process of elimination. I'd have to imagine that the difference is still relatively negligeable due to the fact that the 360 still leads the PS3 by 7 million or so consoles sold worldwide (I just guesstimated that number, I could be off by a million or so).

ArronC07's picture

Well Sony announced 5.5 million units in the Europe earlier this year and MS announced 6 million this month so I would assume that the PS3 has passed the 360 in Europe some time ago. What that means in the UK we don't know because Chart Track are a bit weird with their numbers.

NickgamertagO1's picture

I guess the US is MS's strongest territory as they do less business everywhere else it seems. Kim, would you like to contribute with some "facts" on the subject?

ArronC07's picture

Compared to when and what are the numbers of units that we are talking about?

Pug's picture

Compared to the weekend before. No one seems to have reported on the number of units as of yet.
