New UK sales data from GfK Chart-Track has revealed that the installed base of current generation consoles has more than doubled in the space of a year.

According to the data, which comes from Game Group financial presentation materials, the current UK installed hardware base shared by the Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, DS and PSP totals 17.3 million units, up from 8.8 million last September.

In the year since September 2007 the Wii’s installed base has jumped from 1.1 to 3.6 million units. During the same period, the Xbox 360’s installed base has grown from 1.3 to 2.3 million, the PS3’s from 0.4 to 1.4 million, the DS’s from 3.8 to 7.1 million, and the PSP’s from 2.2 to 2.9 million.

According to forecasts by retailer Game, the total installed hardware base is likely to hit 21 million units by Christmas. Nintendo’s Wii and DS are expected to sell a further 1.3 and 1.2 million units, respectively, over the next three months. The retailer also forecast that Sony will sell half a million PS3s, and Microsoft half a million Xbox 360s, during the same timeframe, while it predicted 200,000 Sony PSP sales between now and Christmas.
