UK digital marketing trade body the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) has announced plans to establish a Game Advertising Council.

The IAB said it will enlist game publishers, technology providers and senior experts to help “ease adoption of advertising in and around videogames” and “present these opportunities to the marketing community in a digestible format.”

One of the UK council’s first objectives will be to evaluate whether the recently released IAB US in-game advertising measurement standards are suitable for adoption in the UK.

The group also plans to release educational materials, hold industry events and conduct market research over the next 12 months.

“Gaming is one of the largest, most immersive and engaging entertainment platforms in the world, yet remains totally misunderstood by a large part of the market,” said Jack Wallington, senior programmes manager for the IAB and coordinator of the Game Advertising Council.

“The US gaming industry is thriving, and we’re seeing some strong parallels over here in the UK. With the US gaining universal agreement on their in-game measurement standard, this is just the ticket for advertisers to make even more of game advertising and something we hope to replicate in the UK through our Game Advertising Council.”

US advertisers spent roughly $55 million on dynamic in-game advertising last year, according to Screen Digest.

That advert in the picture above made me feel sick. I play that game at times, and when you're sniping out the enemy or looking over the battle plan, telling your soldiers their objectives, it can be sickening when you're mowing down people in a "future" environment with that ad in the game.

Luckily game developers like Valve know how much advertising annoys players, but publishers like EA are all hell bent for maximum profit(NFS after NFS). Then Dead Space after Dead Space.
Publishers actually take more then 70 % profit, game devs get 10-15% on consoles and 33% on PC. In case of Valve 100% from steam sales.

It's a business, people do what they have to do to make money. That's how the mainstream industry works.

Honestly, this is why I prefer the GDC over E3, because it celebrates and encourages Indy developers and GDC is just a bit more meaningful in the industry. A person I know who is, I believe, a General Marketing Manager for 2K said that this year's E3 was boring, and I'd have to agree with her.

GDC is where it's at!

Yeah, I'm fully aware of the profit margins of a game. I'm going on to my second year of Computer Games Development and we have to know all these things.

To be honest with you nexon7, I don't care about sequels that much as long as they continue to provide me enjoyment and the feeling that the €40 - €59 spent was well worth it. I would like to see other IP on the market as well, but I'm quite happy with sequels as long as they continue being good games.

Like Unreal Tournament, Gears of War and Neverwinter Nights, each one had a sequel (and in the case of NW, a sequel and shit load of expansions capable even making Sims 2 blush), they're all excellent games.

console game devs need it because of high production costs on consoles.

dear dreamhunk, though I love PC games and wil like to see PC games get at great heights, I am all opposed to hating consoles withouit solid reason. You seem to hate every thing related to console. Arcade machines were also joy at that time and expensive computers were out of reach of anyone. So Actually Consoles got the gaming to heights.
This time Battlefield 2142 is discussed, a PC only game(and quite good too).
You really should give valid reasons for your points, or they look like as if you hate irrationally.

you know what is the real funny part the gaming Industry likes to trash pc gaming alot, I mean they have been saying pc gaming is dead since 1985. Oh the irony!!!!

Here we go again. Gaming hates PC....big conspiracy.....

I should only respond if I can somehow answer in a way that conveys both, the originality of your post & the its relevance to the gaming industry in general.

/facepalm

It's a PC game only, it's Battlefield 2142.

So PC game developers/publishers need it because of the high production costs on developing games on the PC?

dreamhunk's picture

that means free games on the pc will boom even more.

That game is not free, you have to pay for the software and I think you have to pay for hosting your own server.
