Sony has confirmed that UK PS3 sales have topped a million units, while sales of the system have outpaced those of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 for the past four weeks.

Sony UK told MCV that the PS3 has sold a million units in the UK since launching on March 23, 2007, while sales monitor ChartTrack confirmed that the console had reached the milstone sales figure faster than its predecessor, PS2.

ChartTrack also said PS3 and Xbox 360 sales were neck and neck over the Christmas period, but that the Sony console has been outselling the 360 for the last month.

SCEE president and CEO David Reeves said previously that he expects PS3’s European installed base to surpass that of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 by the end of this summer, noting at the time that one million PS3 units had been sold in PAL territories in December 2007 alone.

Publishing giant EA also recently forecast that the PS3 would enjoy sales dominance over Microsoft’s rival console in Europe during 2008.
