Nolan North, the voice actor behind Nathan Drake in PS3 series Uncharted, believes the producers of the upcoming movie adaptation will look to secure major Hollywood talent for the film’s lead roles.
Sony confirmed in July that the franchise was headed to the big screen after signing a deal with Columbia Pictures. The movie’s set to be produced by Avi Arad, Charles Roven, and Alex Gartner.
Speaking on the latest Official PlayStation podcast, North was asked if he was going to audition for the movie, to which he replied: “Actually I just spoke with Ari Arad… Yeah, I want to do the movie. I mean I would love to do it as Nathan Drake and if I keep getting such recognition as bringing this character to life like no one else can, I would love to play myself. But I’ve been in this business for long time now and I’ve done film, I’ve done television and I understand the realities of the business…”
North said that investors are more willing to part with their cash if household names are signed up to a project. If he’s overlooked for the starring role, North would like to see Hugh Jackman of Wolverine fame play Drake.
“I would love them to get Hugh Jackman if they’re not going to use me… I think the producers really would like to see Jackman because… he has that tough guy exterior but… there’s a lot going on behind his eyes. There’s a lot of emotion and sensitivity on that brusque exterior. And he has great comic timing. I mean he’s a phenomenal actor and I just hope that I get a part in the movie where I get to work with Hugh."
I'm not a rabid Uncharted fanboy, but if Nolan North doesn't make the cast then I'm not going to have anything to do with it.
The source material is very cinematic, the voice actor is physically similar to the character design, each instalment is self-contained enough for there not to be issues with continuity - it's a perfect opportunity to create a game movie which, for once, is consistent with the source material, and which could result in a unified franchise in which everything has equal value and nothing ends up as the mad aunt in the attic.
It's a shame in some respects the voice actor can't always be brought across to the film, but understandable.
i'm in total agreement with almost everyone here that Nathan Fillion would be a spot on casting job. Great comic timing, does the badassery well without looking like a Jason Bourne. There's probably no chance of getting this director, but I think Martin Campbell would be a great fit.
And even though it's a movie based on a game...let's keep the CGI under control PLEASE.
I'm sure the film will be every bit as good as the game with it's wonderful, original script & engaging characters ...
... reaches for the sickbag
Nolan and Hugh are both a little old. If Hugh was 10-15 years younger I can see him in the role, unfortunately I don't think Nolan would've ever really cut it. I don't think Fillion or Cibrian really do him justice either. McConaghey? Please.
As for direction James Cameron or Peter Jackson would suit, they both know their games too (Jackson had the nouse to play Psychonauts and get Tim Schaefer to make a decent game tie-in with King Kong) . Jackson would be my number 1, getting decent direction over acting talent is key.
Nolan North is 38. Drake looks to be in his 30's to me.
As far as direction goes, I'd say Zack Snyder would be the right fit.
Now don't be silly, that'll risk it being a passable film, it's got to be Uwe Boll all the way.
Apologies, I should really know better.
Lets talk casting then. Holly Valance for Elena then? Rowan Atkinson as Drake?
Who cares who plays Nathan Drake in the big, cheesy, lame, Hollywood cash in? Just play the games for Christ's sake.
Exactly, nobody complained when they hired Angelina Jolie to play Lara Croft in the TR movies because she wasn't the voice actor. What's the big news here?
The game is the game, the film is the film....and usually one will be way better than the other.
There had already been three different voice actors for Lara Croft by the time the film started.
Nathan Fillion is a no-brainer for the role of Drake. His character in 'Firefly' and 'Serenity' is so uncannily similar in appearance, mannerisms and personality to Drake that the only reason I can think of they wouldn't cast him is that it would be a little TOO obvious.
McConaughey as Drake
Emma Watson as Elena
Michael Douglas as Zorin Lazeravich
Guy Ritchie as Flynn
Willem Dafoe as Tenzin
directed by Michael Bay
That would be the worst movie of the year. And it'd probably sell well, sadly.
MConaughey? Michael Bay?
I sure hope this post was a joke otherwise your posting priveleges are permanently revoked.
@ squazzil4 sounds good except Michael bay. Have you seen transformers 2 it was boring, so unoriginal too much like the first…..
The Michael Bay film would make the most money & Bay could shoot it in 45 days like Transformers2. So it could be in the cinema for March next year. I think McConaghey is available. Unfortunately Michael Douglas is shooting a liberace biopic with Maatt Damon wtf?!!??!?!??...so they might have to get Val Kilmer to play Lazaravic. Or you could use Alec Baldwin if Bay can get him under control on the set.
I'm really looking forward to this - as to if they'll stuff it up or not is another question.
I do think though, that neither Noalan North or Hugh jackman, would be the right people for the character. They need someone young, good looking and funny, which sadly Jackman and North arn't, - not in the sense of a young tresure hunter anyway - not that i have any alternatives. Although, i do think the woman they got to do Elena would proably do the film wonderfuly. She was REALLY good! The right age too!
Nathan Fillion would make a better Drake than Hugh in my opinion.
I second this as well.
I like the game voice actors, don't get me wrong, but Nathan is so much like Drake.
I second Fillion. Drake reminds me of him actually.
Hmmm, i dont know...
Alot of people have suggested Eddie Cibrian, which i actually think is a pertect match, ans he's quite Hollywood. Plus he sounds quite like Drake too...
