The NPD Group has released data showing the top five selling games across PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii in the US market during the first half of 2009.

The chart data, which was provided to Gamasutra, didn’t include limited or collector's edition versions of each game.

Sony's Killzone 2 was the bestselling PS3 game during the first six months of the year. Capcom’s Resident Evil 5 and Street Fighter IV took second and third, followed by THQ's UFC 2009: Undisputed and Sony’s MLB '09: The Show. The report points out that none of the titles have sold a million copies in the States so far this year.

Capcom titles also performed strongly on Xbox 360, with Resident Evil 5 taking the chart top spot and Street Fighter IV fifth place. Sandwiched between them were UFC 2009: Undisputed, Activision’s Call Of Duty: World At War and Microsoft’s Halo Wars. Xbox 360 sales of Resident Evil 5 and UFC 2009: Undisputed are known to have surpassed one million units so far this year.

Wii software sales data for the first six months of 2009 is perhaps most interesting. First party titles Wii Fit, Wii Play and Mario Kart Wii took the top three places, having sold 3.06 million, 1.5 million and 1.4 million copies respectively. Two of these games were released last year, while Wii Play debuted in 2007. EA Sports Active and Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga took fourth and fifth.

Wii Fit, Wii Play and Mario Kart Wii were also the three top selling games for individual platforms in the UK during the first six months of the year, according to ELSPA. Killzone 2, Resident Evil 5 and Call Of Duty: World At War all made the top ten.

It's not too surprising really, the PS3 has had a couple of big 1st party releases (KZ2 and MLB2) Wii has had a solid performance on its first party titles and you can't mess with Halo.

What was a shock was how well UFC went, I'm happy as Larry there's a new boy on the block and good work THQ for taking a punt with this one.

Capcom have had a good showing this year, the gains of these two games should out way the losses on Bionic Commando. The failing of BC is as astounding as UFC's success.

This should set us up for a standard Fall, Autumn, Spring (where ever you are) this year, with COD:MW2 dominating.... ludicrously so.

PS3 & 360 gamers buy 3rd party games, Nintendo fans don't, nothing new here

Killzone is published by Sony and Halo by Microsoft.

I agree for Nintendo... they're the best at understanding their console and their public... always has.
It's funny to see that now that the Wii's bubble has burst (or maybe, that it's just the trend that's slowing down), that the Wii is the same as the N64 and GameCube, where only Nintendo published games would sell... the Wii has the exception of having a non-gamer audience, which is the big difference in terms of visibility that the two previous consoles didn't have. Sony and Microsoft players are not into Nintendo and there are no ways for Nintendo to grab them. It's the same for publishers trying to mimic Nintendo... I mean, it's useless to make (for exemple) a Kart game on the Wii... if it's not Mario, it won't sell.

The thing is also that, at their core all three consoles are entirely different. Back then it was all and only about the library, but not anymore. I have a PS3 (and the same can be told about the xbox) and I really enjoy playing PS1, PS2 and PS3 games on it, plus watching DVD, Blu-ray, cd and picture. I also enjoy downloading add-ons, psp games, movies and the video chat and some of the web functionality. The Wii doesn't have half of that. The only thing I like with the Wii is its backward compatibility, with the virtual console, that allows me to play games from every Nintendo systems. But that's it and I don't feel like, the price of the Wii justify that as a purchase.

I know this might sound off topic, but it really isn't and that's were I totally agree with you. Not much has changed and personnally, I like it that way. However, I'm curious to see how God of War III will impact the sells of the PS3. I assumed that the psp version would've boost the psp sells, therefore getting more publishers on board with the console, but it didn't.
