Ahead of the release of September’s NPD sales data for the US game market next Thursday, analysts have predicted a return to double-digit growth after six months of decline.

Wedbush’s Michael Pachter and EEDAR’s Jesse Divnich expect monthly software sales of $750 million (up 21 per cent year-on-year) and $715 million (up 16 per cent) respectively, driven by the likes of Halo: ODST, The Beatles: Rock Band, Guitar Hero 5, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 and Wii Sports Resort.

EEDAR’s top ten forecast:
Halo 3: ODST (360, Microsoft) - 1,800,000
Wii Sports Resort (Wii, Nintendo) - 500,000
The Beatles: Rock Band (Wii, EA) - 350,000
The Beatles: Rock Band (360, EA) - 325,000
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 (360, Activision) - 300,000
Madden NFL 10 (360, EA) - 275,000
Batman: Arkham Asylum (360, Eidos) - 250,000
Batman: Arkham Asylum (PS3, Eidos) - 250,000
Guitar Hero 5 (360, Activision) - 250,000
Guitar Hero 5 (Wii, Activision) - 200,000

On the hardware front, Pachter and Divnich expect sales to be down five per cent and four per cent year-on-year, respectively. However, either estimate would reflect a substantial rebound, as the prior five months’ unit sales were down an average of 19 per cent. Both analysts also forecast that PS3 will outsell Xbox 360 for the first time in 14 months.

Wedbush / EEDAR hardware sales estimates:
DS - 650,000 / 630,000
PS3 - 410,000 / 400,000
Wii - 390,000 / 375,000
Xbox 360 - 350,000 / 370,000
PSP - 185,000 / 190,000
PS2 - 120,000 / 125,000

"PS2 - 120,000 / 125,000"

That figure explains why the first SKU of 60gb BC Ps3s was canceled. It was a mistake in the first place.
It must cost them about 20$ to build a ps2 by now and it keeps selling by the bundles at 99$ a piece, TEN YEARS after it's release.

The 60 GB was cancelled because Sony/Tretton was unhappy with PS3 software sales, not hardware. And it is never the right decision to remove functionality from a product.

I can buy the PS3 selling that much because of the redesign and 100 buck price drop, but 350k-370k for the 360 is too much. It didn't have a price drop, it just had a price reconfiguring. Ok, so the most expensive one is now the same price as the 60 gig I don't see that making much of a difference. And I also think we're too far into this generation for Halo to make much of a difference in console sales. If you like Halo, you've already purchased a 360 and if you've been on the fence you're not going to buy a 360 because a spin-off is released. It's great it has all of Halo 3's multiplayer maps and matchmaking bundled but again, if you like that you already have Halo 3 and a 360. In one week we'll know.

I agree. I think MS has to do something to combat the increased PS3 momentum because I don't think the substitution/elimination of the Elite/Pro was enough.

there's nothing MS can do except another price cut, last year's price cuts quickly put a stop to their brief moment of profitability, and last month's price cut probably put them even deeper in the red, so how many more billions in losses is MS willing to absorb just to beat Sony?

The 360 hasn't cost MS nearly as much as the PS3 has Sony. Granted, MS is still riding the debt from the first Xbox, which required incredible expenditures just to break into the market. Nonetheless, MS's gaming division has seen a few profitable years with the 360. Can SCE say as much with the PS3?

You are delusional.

I'm guessing, DubsTF, you have no idea how much Sony was losing per console sold on the PS3. Even at its ridiculous launch price, it was significantly more per console than any other in history.

you forget that one advantage of Sony is that it has a quite large product portfolio. The PS3 may make a loss, but you're forgetting the PS2 and the PSP. The PS2 is still selling very nicely and the PSP is also quite healthy. Both are generating since years a profit.
And think also about all the memory cards, accesories, licenses that Sony is selling for all three platforms.

In my opinion the market is too small for three companies: Nintendo won't be the one stopping, Sony is going through the storm with its armada and MS? Wouldn't be surprised if MS pulled one day the plug.

Don't forget: You read it here first!

"you forget that one advantage of Sony is that it has a quite large product portfolio. The PS3 may make a loss, but you're forgetting the PS2 and the PSP."

and Microsoft has virtually the rest of the (software) computing world, not to mention PC peripherals, etc

I was only referring to the games division of Sony. Let's not start talking about Sonys other products like Bravias, Vaios, Cameras, etc.

For a company it's only important if a division makes a profit or not. It will be very difficult for Balmer and co. to continue convincing the shareholders, that the future of MS games division is bright. Sony pn the other side can say: "Look dear shareholders, we have made a lot of money from the games division with the PS1 and PS2 and PSP. O.k. the PS3 is not the big hit yet, but if we go through the storm...."
You have to understand the mentality of the shareholders: For them it's only important if a division makes profit or loss. Well probably they are capable of closing their eyes shortly if a division makes loss, but after a certain time, they are gonna knock on the door of the CEOs and tell them to change the direction or else they are gonna sell their shares. Which means that the prices are gonna fall...

MS has lost over $8B in their gaming division, $4B on Xbox and so far another $4B on 360, so let's not exaggerate a few brief quarters of profitability, Sony right now is in a much better position than MS is because they've focused on bringing costs of the hardware down
