Developer Valve has appealed the Australian Office of Film and Literature Classification’s decision to refuse to grant Left 4 Dead 2 a rating.

“The title, targeted for release exclusively on Xbox 360 and PC November 17, has been rated in the majority of the world and awaiting final ratings in the UK and New Zealand, where final ratings are expected in the coming days,” the developer said. “Meanwhile, the ruling in Australia from the OFLC has been appealed by Valve.”

No rating higher than 15+ currently exists for games in Australia, despite the fact that movies and magazines can receive adult classification. In a statement explaining its decision to ban the game, the OFLC cited Left 4 Dead 2’s “realistic, frenetic and unrelenting violence”.

A spokesperson for the game’s publisher, EA, has told GameSpot that adults should have the right to choose the games they play.

"It’s funny that a place like Australia, which has come up with some pretty violent material in the past with something like Mad Max, can effectively ban videogames for the same reason," the rep said. "EA believes that adults should have the right to make their own choices when it comes to the content they consume."

The spokesperson wouldn’t comment on whether Valve would make changes to the game in a bid to reverse the OFLC’s decision.

Is such a bad arguement, its like, "hhhhhhhmmmmmmm what came from australia, bbq, surfing ooh Mad Max" next they will claim they were all decended from criminals anyway

Well, they are pretty much all descended from criminals anyway >.>

Still, it's pretty lame that they're banning this game.

Oh well, at least there is still Steam for those who wish to download the game there. I'm sure that the ban doesn't apply to that.

I hope.

Ah, what do I care?

there is always imports, when will governments learn that you can never really ban anything

Agreed. Look at drugs!

You don't import drugs, you smuggle 'em.

Try putting a copy of Manhunt in a condom and slipping it where the sun doesn't shine! ; )

Awsome comment!

Done and done! lol!

Man if you did that what a disapointment it would be to load it up to find a slightly above average game (also please dont start a Manhunt good/bad debate)

edshot's picture

I'm sorely tempted, but ok, I promise I won't. ; )

Ha, whatever you think of Manhunt it aint worth that!!!

pfff, thankyou senators who use video games as a family values re-election carrot...
and it's so arbitrary what gets knocked on the head...dead rising gets through, kirby and his cannibalism gets through...bomberman and his suicide bomb training gets through...and of course every ww2 shooter is just as violent as left for dead, can't believe that they will never allow an adult rating system.

Great news for those L4D2 boycotters - they can bugger off to Australia.

They've got to make a reference to things like this with the Sniper in TF2. Somehow.

How could Valve make changes to a game like this to reverse OFLC's decision - Replace the zombies with pink blobby shapes that turn into gold stars when shot with a water gun?..............Mmmm, hang on, let me write that down.....

So much for the liberalisation of Australia now John Howard is out of power.
