Valve confirms new engine in the works, possibly Source 2

Valve co-founder and president Gabe Newell has confirmed that the developer has a new engine in the works while speaking to a group of 4chan members who visited the Washington-based studio recently.

“So what do you want to know about that’s not Half-Life 3?” Newell asks the group in the above video of the meeting, the first response to which is a question about whether Valve has built anything to succeed Source Engine, the tech that powers, among other games, Half-Life 2, Portal 2 and Left 4 Dead 2.

“We’ve been working on new engine stuff for a while,” Newell responds, before adding what sounds like, “we’ll probably just roll it out in one of our new games.”

Another 4chan member then asks whether it’s an entirely new engine, to which Newell succinctly responds, “Yeah”.

It’s hardly surprising to discover Valve has a new engine in the works, but Newell’s somewhat guarded responses don’t actually confirm whether or not the tech in question is Source 2, or something else.

However, following the release of Source Filmmaker earlier this year, users discovered files in the software that made mention of a next-gen engine, referred to as Source 2.
