Vietnam's Growing Online Gamer Base

A growing economy and youth population means more gaming, study says.

The number of online gamers in Vietnam will surpass 10 million by 2011, San Francisco's Pearl Research forecasts.

An abstract for the study, "Online Games Market in Vietnam," said the economy has been growing by 7 percent in the past decade, with "significant investments from technology companies" rolling in.

This growth, among other sub-factors, has encouraged a rise in online gaming. Pearl interviewed Vietnamese gamers who said they were spending around 60,000 to 100,000 VND ($3-6) per month on online gaming.

"A few" gamers at a "high-end" Internet cafe said they were spending around 500,000 VND ($31) per month.

These users are buying virtual items for their online games. "The Internet cafes that Pearl Research visited in Vietnam were consistently crowded with users playing online games," read the report.

The growth of online gaming is also driven by a large youth population: about 50 percent of the population is under 25.

Pearl added that there are around 21 million Internet users in Vietnam with an Internet penetration rate of 23.5 percent.

"While Vietnam has a rapidly emerging games market, critical challenges include government regulations on online games, the worldwide slowing economy, developing infrastructure, and low income levels," the firm stated.
