Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning has become “the fastest-selling new MMO of all time”, according to publisher EA and developer Mythic Entertainment.
Over 500,000 players have registered for the fantasy MMO across North America, Europe and the Oceanic territories since the game was launched last week.
“In just one week we have a half a million people playing WAR online, and the ranks of Order and Destruction are growing at a record-breaking pace for a new MMORPG,” said Mark Jacobs, co-founder and general manager of Mythic.
“We spent years working to provide players with the most stable, epic, and polished online world we could, but it is the players that have truly brought the Age of Reckoning to life.”
The key word in EA's announcement is "new." When the World of Warcraft expansion The Burning Crusade launched in January 2007, the title sold 2.4 million in its first 24 hours--but technically, it wasn't a "new" MMO.
I wonder what the definition of registered means, since they sold 1.5.
also what does that mean for the analysys that "Warhammer Base to "Level Off" at 250-300K"
http://www.edge-online.com/news/analyst-warhammer-base-level-off-250-300...
I think they mean the people who after buying the disc went online and completed the authentication steps, entering their credit cards before starting playing on their servers.
What the analyst meant when he guessed the registration base would level off at XX is that after the launch frenzy cools off, there should remain this many monthly subscribers on average on the long haul. He is probably making that prediction based on what happened with Age of Conan (high sales in first weeks because of the marketing buzz... then dropping to a point at which it stabilized). He may be completely wrong and it could go the other way around, growing exponentially month after month because of positive word of mouth, like in the case of other successful MMORPGs...
