"This is truly a historic day for both EA and Mythic as we prepare to send more copies of WAR to retailers than any other newly launched MMORPG in North America and Europe"

Mythic Entertainment and Electronic Arts have announced that Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (WAR) has sold 1.5 million units to retailers as the game prepares for its worldwide launch.

WAR, which releases across North America, Europe, and Oceania this Thursday following three years in development, sets a company record for the most retail pre-orders placed for a PC title in publisher EA's history.

"This is truly a historic day for both EA and Mythic as we prepare to send more copies of WAR to retailers than any other newly launched MMORPG in North America and Europe,” said Mythic co-founder and GM Mark Jacobs.

“Over the course of our beta, over a million gamers throughout the world sent a clear signal to us - they want WAR, and we are more than happy to oblige them."

Pre-orders for the game compare favorably to those of Funcom's Age of Conan, which shipped 700,000 copies to retailers for its release earlier this year, but fall short of World of Warcraft expansion The Burning Crusade, which sold 2.4 million copies to consumers worldwide on day one in January 2007, breaking first day PC game sales records in North America and Europe. That record will soon be up for grabs again as Blizzard announced on Monday a November 13 release date for World of Warcraft’s second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King.

Too bad it doesn't look like Warhammer

It begs the question of how good a game it is, or whether it's just being sold on a few community and multiplayer features slapped onto what otherwise would be a rather boring RPG. It also begs the question, whether people really have time for another timesink, or, even if they quit another MMO, they are ready to invest that amount of time into the next game; at a premium subscription price nonetheless.

There is always a fresh new set of mmo players coming up... a good number of the tenagers playing WoW nowadays were in nursery when some of us were playing Ultima and EQ. So whilst some have invested a great deal of time in recent MMOs there will be people who havent played one at all that will try this.

We will have to wait and see how good it is. I wont be playing it, as I just dont have time anymore :)
