US movie and TV streaming service Netflix will be made available on Nintendo’s Wii this spring.

Internet connected Wii owners will require a Netflix subscription to access the service, with prices starting at $8.99 a month. Netflix currently houses around 17,000 movies and TV shows.

Wii users will also require an "instant-streaming" disc to access Netflix, much like PS3 owners.

“Our research shows that 86 per cent of all US Wii consoles are located in the living room,” said Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. “The Wii console is the social hub around which friends and family members gather to play games and have fun. Soon both new and long-time Wii owners will enjoy the benefits of Netflix – and a variety of informational and entertainment options – by being Netflix members and connecting their consoles to the internet.”

Following the successful launch of Netflix on Xbox 360 in November 2008, company CEO Reed Hastings said that it was his ambition to make the service available on all console eventually. He said of the Nintendo deal: “Our goal is to offer Netflix members as many ways as possible to watch movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix right to their TVs and to give non-members more and compelling reasons to consider the service. Joining forces with Nintendo, which has been so immensely popular with consumers since its introduction, is a very meaningful step in that direction.”

Wii’s US installed base stood at 26 million at the end of December, while Netflix had 11.1 million US subscribers as of September 30, 2009.
