Electronic Arts, which dubbed itself the number one publisher in North America and Europe in the quarter ended June 30, generated net revenues of $161 million from Wii software during the three month period, making the platform the most lucrative for the company.
Driven primarily by sales of EA Sports Active, the company’s bestselling Wii title to date, quarterly Wii revenues were up 48 per cent year-over-year. The company said that its Wii share hit a record 21 per cent in North America and was 13 per cent in Europe, thanks to the success of its exercise title, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10, EA Sports Grand Slam Tennis and Rock Band 2.
Sales of The Sims 3, which was the bestselling title at retail in Europe and North America combined during the quarter, ensured that the company's PC platform returns outstripped those from PS3, Xbox 360 and handheld systems. EA's PC titles generated $124 million during the quarter, although that figure was down 18 per cent year-over-year.
Interestingly, the publisher saw a far greater return on PS3 software than it did on Xbox 360 games. The platforms generated $121 million and $73 million, down 25 per cent and 46 per cent year-over-year respectively.
PSP revenues topped those brought in by DS, as games for Sony’s platform raked in $38 million compared to $28 million from those for Nintendo’s handheld.
North America once again accounted for the majority of the publisher’s revenues. The region produced $343 million of revenues, compared with $258 million from Europe and $43 million from Asia.
For the first quarter of its financial year, EA reported an increase in losses and a decline in revenues, but the company still managed to beat analysts’ expectation.
Dreamhunk changes tack now:
Consoles don't make any money, PC is the only one that does. The Wii? Not a console.
the publisher saw a far greater return on PS3 software than it did on Xbox 360 games.
Bobby Kotick eat yer heart out!
Even though there's no direct parallel, I'm sure Bobby "Douchebag" Kotick will stay the course on his opinion and point out that PS3 games sold better for them in the quarter, and look at the overall results: http://www.edge-online.com/news/eas-losses-widen-as-revenue-falls
