On Wednesday, Electronic Arts released preliminary details on the upcoming Wii version of Dead Space.

Titled Dead Space Extraction, the game will be a prequel to 2008's Dead Space for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Instead of the over-the-shoulder perspective of the previous game, Extraction will utilize the Wii's motion controls from a first-person perspective, EA said.

The game is due to launch in fall this year.

Extraction will recount the events leading up to main character Isaac Clarke's mission on the space vessel USG Ishimura, and tell the story of a "handful of space colonists desperately struggling to escape from a horrific infection on the Aegis VII mining colony deep in the furthest regions of space."

As for other details, EA would only say that "a new heroine," would be appearing in the game.

Although the game is on the typically family-friendly Wii, expect a Mature rating for Extraction.

Glen Schofield, VP and General Manager of EA's Redwood Shores studio, the same house behind the original Dead Space, said in a statement, "Nintendo has a wonderful history in the horror genre and we are thrilled to build on that tradition with Dead Space Extraction.

"As we were developing Dead Space, we realized that there was so much of the story going untold. Dead Space Extraction tells that story with all of the intensity, blood and gore that fans would expect."

EA CEO John Riccitiello said in the company's most recent earning call that EA would be dedicating significant resources to the market-leading Wii, developing games for both casual and hardcore gamers.

During that call, Riccitiello offered the initial confirmation that Dead Space for Wii was in development. "We're bringing a Wii title to market this year, and it absolutely has the quality and fear factor that you got on the PS3 and Xbox 360 and PC last year," he assured.

It's a railgun shooter, though. I would have preferred a first or third person shooter with free exploration.

You mean on rails shooter? Seems a bit antiquated, no? Not mentioned anywhere in the article, did you hear about it somewhere else?
