Call of Duty: World at War is set to break a new record for the longest flight at the top of the UK all-format chart in the lead up to Christmas. Activision’s war shooter has one more week before it can claim the record, as well as being the official Christmas number one.
Data provided by Chart Track shows little movement at the top-end of the UK charts; Call of Duty remains first, Mario Kart Wii holds second, FIFA 09 stays in third. The sales rates of these games have barely moved, each with a one or two percent difference in turnover compared to last week.
Mario Kart Wii, with sales up one percent, is now the likeliest game to unseat World at War’s top position. Nintendo’s heavily-advertised racer was 27,000 units behind this week’s number one, and is the most likely chance Nintendo has at a Christmas number one since 1998’s Ocarina of Time. Back in early November Paddy Power gave the racer odds of 40-1 for taking the top spot.
The entire top ten features the same titles from last week, with limited movement across the board. EA’s Need for Speed: Undercover moves up one place to fourth after a three percent sales rise, while Brain Training drops to fifth from the same percentage decline. Fallout 3’s price promotion pushes the game to sixth following a six percent sales lift.
Nintendo’s Wii Fit remains in eighth while the Wii-remote-bundled Wii Play leapfrogs it from ninth to seventh after a 16 percent turnover boost. Eidos’s Tomb Raider Underworld looks likely to drop out the top ten next week as the game falls from sixth to tenth. Guitar Hero World Tour climbs one place to ninth after the biggest climb in sales at 16 percent.
No new entries make the top 40, though there’s much stirring outside the top ten. Following its TV advert campaign, Sonic Unleashed sees a sales surge of 87 percent, launching it from 33 to 12. LittleBigPlanet, which has also been pushed via TV spots pushes it from 29 to 16, and crucially, takes it to the top of the PS3 chart.
