Microsoft and Sony will cut the prices of the Xbox 360 and PS3 later this year, according to a new report.
Ars Technica says that it has learnt from a reliable source that the 60GB Xbox 360 Pro will be discontinued, with strong promotional bundling meaning that US stock runs out in July or August.
The 120GB Elite Xbox 360 will then become the standard model, before receiving an early September price cut.
The site also reports that US retailers only have about 60 days worth of 80GB PS3 stock left. It says that Sony will be shifting its focus to selling the 160GB PS3 before dropping the price of the hardware and launching the PS3 Slim this autumn.
To date, Sony has insisted that it has no plans for a redesigned PS3.
The platform holder has given the same line concerning a PS3 price cut, although numerous analysts expect such a move at some point over the coming months. Sterne Agee's Arvind Bhatia said recently that “industry sources indicate Sony is planning a $100 price cut on the PS3 in mid-August, just prior the launch of Madden,” while Lazard Capital Markets’ Colin Sebastian believes Sony will likely drop the price of the PS3 some time before the end of the summer.
I can't believe Microsoft are going to discontinue their flagship white colour console (which also goes along with their white branding and marketing) and just stock the Elite.
Aesthetically the Elite has to have the worst finish to a console ever. It looks like a small child coloured it in, badly, using matt black paint.
I think the best proof that sony are in fact about to release a slimmer, cheaper, ps3, is the fact that I just gave in this last month to buy a crappy massive one for the price of a small country. Following this logic, the new ones will also be backwards compatible.
What's disturbing is the logic behind that jives with my own experiences ;)
Certainly as reliable as anaylst predictions, at anyrate!
I bought my Xbox 360 on the first day of release. Yeah, I did get a RROD about 18 months ago, but just once and the turn-around was only 10 days for me, here in San Diego (I played my Xbox and PS2 while it was missing). Since it was bought with that huge 20-gig (snicker) hard drive, I've been attempting to reserve space for only the best DLC. I would love for the Elite to drop in price. I have a 72" 1080P HDTV, so the addition of an HDMI port would also be a worthy upgrade for me. I'm currently wondering if even the 120-gig Hard drive is actually big enough. i have a 120-gig Ipod, and it's already full of music (no videos or extra games, just 30,486 songs).
I like the point that StealthBadger makes about the dual price drop not affecting the competition that much. I agree, too.;An Elite vs. PS3 with equal price drops would not sway the buyer's mind. Usually, at this price point, buyers come into a store with preset desires about what console they want to spend money on.
I do love my current 360, but wouldn't mind a discount on an upgrade.

In response to Barla, what do you buy that is genuinely worth it's RRP?!
I bought my 360 before the price cut last March and have easily had £200 worth of fun so far. Yes, it's not the greatest quality of build quality (nor is the PS3 though), but it's still well worth it.
I believe now (and always have) that the 360 is the better value of the 2 consoles and if they drop the price again, then SOny will be Dead in the water (unless they half the price of the PS3).

I'm not saying you had any credibility before, but if you did it's totally gone after making this comment.
Perhaps he's waiting on the fabled $50 subsidized PS3.

Nah, I'm waiting for this:
That's awesome! I've never seen that before.
Did you just rip that? Normally, I make all my own pics....I guess I need to start looking around more.
What do you use to make your pics?
Nothing special. Photoshop on the desktop, & Paint Shop 8 on the 1000HE; which I think is like everyone else.
The only problem with the laptop is working outside. LED's 100 times better than LCD, but the colors still "wash out" - which explains the foot I didn't see to paint, but I'm proud of my Dual-Cap 3.
It's an awsome picture! I just have Paint.Net on my laptop. Would you say that would be fine enough?
Where do you upload your pictures as well?
It's fine. As long as it has enough photo/light/shadow/effects for you. ImageShack is an easy & free way to shovel photos.
Edit: As a program, Paint.net is more than capable doing what you're looking to do - Quick & Dirty Blog pic's - it certainly supports much more than I've done.
Awsome! Thanks for that! I might try to create some witty comeback pictures then!
I'll browse around the web then for objects that have a white background or a background without a lot of different colours, make it easy for me to just modify the object I want then.
Yeah, any solid color -doesn't have to be white- the program can tag for easy removal, or something without a lot of action around what you want so you just cut it out & stick on a new image.
Technology pic's & logos are easy because corporate websites always have some boring shot of the product on some "non-background".
Too true! Thanks for that!
Time to spread my evil elsewhere on other forums now! Now I have to wait a few more days before my suspension with the Escapist is over.

None of the systems are worth their salt (PS3/360/Wii) at their current price IMO. The PS3 is far too expensive, the 360 is put together with duck tape and blu-tack with regards to build quality, plus the Wii is below par in terms of games.
Personally, i'm not in any rush to buy any of these systems, i'll do so when i feel the price is justified. I'd pay no more than £149.99 for the PS3, £99.99 for the 120GB 360 SKU and £79.99 for the Wii.
If you've had £200 worth of fun...then good for you.
But these current prices for consoles are not for everyone, so don't go forcing your views on others just because it suits yourself!
I believe now (and always have) that the 360 is the better value of the 2 consoles and if they drop the price again, then SOny will be Dead in the water (unless they half the price of the PS3).
I couldn't careless, these are consumer goods. Fuck the lot of them i.e. Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo.
*(nor is the PS3 though)*
Errr yes it is and attempts to paint the 360 and the PS3 as equals in terms of hardware builds is, frankly, ludicrous.
*I believe now (and always have) that the 360 is the better value of the 2 consoles and if they drop the price again, then SOny will be Dead in the water (unless they half the price of the PS3).*
You do know that lifecycle point to lifecycle point the PS3 has matched or slightly oversold the 360 and if you break it down feature for feature over the lifetime of the consoles, 10 years according to both MS and Sony, the 360 is by far and away the most expensive console ever made. You don't notice it because part of the cost is hidden in yearly fees to use basic features.
That's not to say that the 360 isn't a good console in terms of the software available but it's fine to say that's its a poorly made expensive console.
Also think this way Sony has sold 21 million consoles while it's competitors are half its price and has maintained its sales figures following a cut on the 360, 2nd place in Japan (1st place for several weeks this year) and is moving from 3rd to 2nd in EU in terms of overall numbers sold , what do you think going to happen once a price cut occurs on the PS3?
Dead in water? Hyperbole.
I think a price cut on the sony side will be more significant then any price cut that MS may do.
There are a lot of people that are just waiting for the PS3 price cut to happen more then the XBox. The constant rumours about a PS3 price cut just make people waiting.
If Sony cuts $100 and offer the Slim model with PS2 BC, then that could in fact turn the table strongly to their side. Could the rumoured firmware 3.0 offer PS2 BC? That would make sense.
Ars Technica is pretty reliable. It might actually happen this time.
Microsoft has been claiming to have their "System-on-a-Chip" ready, & that it will reduce manufacturing costs. Sony can't afford to see another Xbox price drop. If Microsoft makes good on this. I don't think Sony would have any other option.
If the Xbox is half the price of a PS3, it wouldn't be a competition. It would be a slaughter. Especially if the, admitted, new market are people who don't know much about either device.
Well, the 360/PS3 aren't worth the RRP both Sony and Microsoft want for them. So far i haven't bought either of them.
Here in the UK, the PS3 (or Slim) should be reduced to £149.99. As for Microsoft, they should stop the production of the Arcade unit as it's hopless without a HDD and the 60GB SKU doesn't have a big enough HDD considering MS are offering full 360 games as downloads now.
Therefore the 120GB SKU should be Microsoft's priority and sold at £99.99 because to say the 360 was put together with duck tape and blu-tack is a bit of an understatement.
Do you think this kind of hardware doesn't cost money to make? Do you want MS and Sony to offer the consoles for free?
I don't know what's wrong with people.
Do you actually think these systems are worth their RRP at present?
None of these systems are worth their salt at the current RRP, but that's my opinion.
If MS match any sony price cut if/when it happens then there is no way back for sony this gen.
Remember, part of this announcement suggests that the 360 premium is going to be removed. Using current amazon.com prices (i am from the UK, and this seemed to be the obvious place to get US prices, if these prices aren't accurate representations please mention it!), 360 elite and PS3 are both $399, so if sony and microsoft were to both drop the same amount off the cost, then your choice would be either a PS3 or a 360 elite for $299. I would guess that this would increase PS3 sales more than 360, personally, as there has been a 360 available at this price already.
In the UK, 360 elite is quite a lot cheaper than the PS3, so the effect would probably depend on the relative price cuts.
If I had a penny for every PS3 price cut story I'd probably have enough money to actually buy one. Probably.
