Sky Player, Sky’s online TV service, will be introduced to Xbox Live in October, Microsoft has confirmed.
Announced in May, the service will allow Xbox 360 owners to access a range of channels and programmes to view live or on-demand.
While details of the full channel line-up and pricing are still to be confirmed, users are expected to be able to access movies and entertainment shows, as well as documentaries and programming dedicated to kids, music, the arts and sport, including Premier League football and Test Match cricket.
Microsoft Ireland told VG247 that the service will go live next month, while Digital Spy reports that it will be introduced alongside access to popular social networking sites Facebook and Twitter via a dashboard update.
Content will initially be offered in standard definition only, and won’t be recordable.
skytv blah blah facebook blah blah twitter blah blah, when the hell is last.fm coming?!
I bet they charge you for it by putting it in its LIVE Gold online surcharge.
I'm not sure it's a good idea when you think how prone to breakdown constantly used Xboxes are.
While this is nice, i'd still rather have iPlayer and/or 4OD, both of which are free. How about it Microsoft? Or is there just not enough money in it for you to bother.
They can't charge you for BBC iPlayer so don't count on that ever turning up.
Are you saying Microsoft only do things if they can make money? For shame! Sky and MS are good partners, they both enjoy sucking money out of people until they run dry. Then they suck some more.
Get in.
Oh hang on, I have to pay?
Of course you do, you also have to have a gold subscription to access Facebook and Twitter. You know the very same Facebook and Twitter that's FREE at the point of use on every other system.
I have a gold subscription, but it would be nice if this covered the odd Sky1 program I wanted to watch too. Oh well feck it, I'm not paying more. Are Facebook and Twitter available now via the 360 dashboard?
On the same note, downlodable content for games seem to be becoming the future a lot faster than I thought it would, but what astonishes me more is people are lapping it up!
Microsoft - "Oh you can't play Halo 3 online properly without the Mythic Map pack etc, and we didn't want to make Arkham Asylum actual value for money so we decided to charge you for the extra levels ie. the rest of the game that should have been included."
Punter - "Oh OK, fair enough. I've already paid for a console, a live subscription, and for the games, but it would be sooo coool to give you more money for extra exclusive content. Here you go Microsoft."
[Punter hands over money]
Microsoft - "Thanks. We counted on you being mug enough to pay us."
I had Sky Player on my PC, during the Champions League the traffic gets too busy so all you get is a jerky picture and the words "Buffering" a lot. Its not worth paying for on PC / 360, just get a Sky box for your telly. Sky HD is worth the money if you have a HD TV, plus you have access to Sky+, much more useful. The iPlayer on Wii and PS3 has been successful as its free!
The iPlayer has been so successful because its both free and it's a robust offering.
Two things you could never say about the Sky Player from my experiences!
I've never used Sky Player so I wouldn't know. I don't even pay for Sky anymore, I don't see the point in paying over the odds for that amount of dross.
This is true. There's never anything on. My mate gets the whole Sky+ HD package, Sky Movies and Sky Sports, yet we were sat around this Sunday evening and there was literally NOTHING on. Why else do you pay £60-£70 a month if it's not to be entertained Sunday night?!?!
We ended up watching Peep Show again from Friday night.
I agree with Duncan_Stewart and zerobob.
A) get a sky box
B) Sky sucks
used to have Virgin Media at uni, infinately better IMO, unfortunately im not in a cable area anymore, a Virgin media deal would be far better as it would mean people like myself could have access, whereas 99.9 percent of the country can get Sky anyway
