Microsoft has moved to assure Xbox Live users that plans to brings adverts to Xbox Live won’t interfere with their gaming experience.
"I've seen quite a bit of discussion today about how we're bringing Silverlight ads to Live in the future," said Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hryb, Xbox Live's director of programming. "I need to let you know that you don't need to worry about a huge influx of ads across the dashboard.
"One of our core principles is to enhance, not interfere with the gaming experience, and we work directly with our partners to only deliver experiences that are relevant to the Live community.
"Silverlight will help make those ads a more organic part of the dashboard, like we've done with some of the NXE slots in the past. No one on the team wants to turn the dashboard into something that looks like like Shibuya Crossing. That's just not good for anyone."
does this mean more dash for destruction games?
Enhance, yeah right!!! Does that mean more branches of the dashboard to wade through before you get to the important part. Boot straight to disk people, only way to avoid all this tripe!!
I already pay for an Xbox Live subscription and would appreciate not being bombarded by stuff that I have no intension of buying.
I'd prefer if they gave you the option off turning all the huge Icons off and have the marketplace tucked away somewhere all they do at the moment is clutter my 1080p screen (One can dream!). If I want to buy something I will, I don't need the merchandise shoved down my throat.
Playstation store has struck the right balance (for me anyway). You know exactly where the content is found and when it updates and they don't mask the cost of content with a points system, so you know exactly what things are costing you. In comparison I have bought more content from PS Store than I ever have on XBL.
It's simple you either use advertisements to "pay" for the service or you use a subscription method. I refuse to pay for LIVE as a principle as I feel that MS have a bloody cheek charging for a service that everyone else manages to provide for free at the point of use.
Looks like their cheek just increased! Wankers.
This looks like another one of those decisions made by a businessman who doesn't give a crap about what they are selling and how unpopular the move will be seen by the current user-base. This is just a "solid, easy way forward" to expand profits and everyone at Microsoft has voted yes to the idea....obviously.
This shouldn't be stood for. If they reduce or stop the Live subscription fee then...maybe.
Problem is, as a consumer, do we really have a leg to stand on? I mean most people will have already paid their Live subscription up front. The only argument I can see it that Microsoft are moving the goal posts in terms of the service people have subscribed to.
I just hope these additional adverts don't slow down the whole online experience at all.
Wow, more PR bullshit from MS.
The day I see an ad on my Xbox while I'm paying 60 bucks a year for that service is the day I will quit Xbox Live. As much as I love the service and how it's done, I will never in my life pay for this any more if there are banners and stuff on my account page. I have no problem with the already in use gaming ads, but one ad for a cellphone or a shaver and I'm out.
Wow MS does seem to be taking us for a ride why have to sit and endure any type of ads when were paying for something that should be free in the first place.
Not necessarily, it depends on what the adverts are and how they are used. Currently when I bring up my dash I have a few of the windows dedicated to "In stores this week" and such like... all of which point me to demos with the aim of getting me to buy games... in saying that I've ended up playing demos for things i hadnt heard of and enjoyed them, this has also been used for the arcade...
So lets see how they do it and then if its not to our liking we can lodge our complaints and scrap our live subscriptions :P until then lets not make too many assumptions.
You could also set your machine to game straight to the disc and not the dash if you dont want to know about whats available on the marketplace and such like anyway
Ha ha ha!!!! Xbox users pay for Live and they have to put up with advertising. That's M$ for you. Man, I would be FUCKING disgusted in that position. Fair enough if it was free and the ad revenue was paying for it but it ain't free. There is nothing that pisses me off more than paying money to be advertised to. That's why I get to the cinema 15 mins late when I go to the movies. Seriously, Xbox users, I don't think you should stand for this.
"There is nothing that pisses me off more than paying money to be advertised to."
I feel exactly the same way about Sky television, which I refuse to get.
I'm paying for hardware. I'm paying for software. I'm paying for Live. Why on earth should I be forced to have any advertisements on my XBox?
This should do wonders for mod chip sales.
It still remains to be seen how and where the advertisements appear. But I will definitely be pissed off as a Gold XBL member if I'm subjected to huge rich media ads that takeover my TV and hinder what I'm doing on my 360.
These Silverlight ads are interfering with my Edge experience.
I've seen some screenshots of the new ad model, and you know, you don't really notice it.
More like "join the Army kids and have a great career getting your ass shot at!!" lol
just wait till they trace your dorm IP and send a local college fund rep straight to your door.
Personally, I think the world famous Shibuya Crossing is awesome! Poor choice of comparison?
