Microsoft said Monday that the demo for Capcom's Resident Evil 5 on Xbox 360 exceeded 1.8 million downloads in its first week of availability.
Over 1.3 million users downloaded the demo in its first three days. The game was initially available only to paying Xbox Live Gold members, becoming available to all members on January 29.
Microsoft said 53 percent of Xbox Live Gold members downloaded the game in Japan, where the Resident Evil franchise is known as Biohazard.
The demo is now also available on PlayStation Network.
Resident Evil 5's release is slated for March 13.
It's the same control system as 4 which all discerning critics (9/10 in Edge though it should have been a 10) and Gamecube owners agreed was one of the best videogames of all time - this isn't GOW2 people!!
As Fear 2 is being mentioned; I shan't be buying the console version after that sub par demo. What happened to the beautiful gfx and fx that were in the original PC game that i ran with a GS6800. The slowmo was incredible as plaster, dust and bullet fire lit the screen up like a scene from the Max Payne Futuremark benchmark test. So why does the 360 version, at times, look like its borrowed effects from the last Duke Nukem game?!!
I love my gameplay but I'm a graphics whore too :D
"Am I evil?"
Er, Feature Preacher, what are you talking about? FEAR and RE are two different types of games. FEAR's and FPS whereas RE is not. And you couldn't run and gun in RE 4 and that turned out fine, particularly on the Wii. And besides, the first FEAR bombed due to it being totally boring! The slow-mo thing got tiresome after a while and the levels lacked inspiration and the game as a whole lacks anything to really grip you.
I do admit though, I found the demo a little underwhelming. It felt flimsy when you shot the enemies. RE 4 was great in that it had a 'meaty' feel to it when you blew away the enemies. I can't see that changing now for this...
Also, the mapping of the controls didn't seem as good as RE 4 on the Gamecube. I got used to it but I've not gone back to play the demo as much as I thought (and wanted) to...
I'll still be getting this but I highly doubt it will match the brilliance of no. 4....
What did all those negative people expect?! Jumping on zombies like they're little goombas?
The Resident Evil series always had a downgraded control system, but perfect for that type of game.
Theres been an awful lot of negativity on the feedback of the demo. Heres hoping the final game is nothing like the demo. Otherwise there'll be a million copies coming back..
The best feature of this game is the handy boob locator.

I downloaded it but just to check out the movement and feel, I didn't move out of the opening scene so haven't seen anything else of the demo, this will be a game to saviour just like the fantasic Res Evil 4, probably the greatest videogame of all time (well one of :D )
Why does the 'Edit' comment link not work so i can correct my spelling goddammit!!
How many copies is this game going to sell on the 360 alone? Two, three million? Talk about possibly opening the eyes of major 3rd party titles out of Japan selling very well on the 360. I know it's only a demo, but by the end May I'd be shocked if this title doesn't crack 2 million copies sold in the US for the 360 alone.
My guess is that it will eventually sell around 2 million worldwide on 360 but on a slow burn.
Capcom already knows the benefit of appealing to Western audiences and supporting 360 based on their previous successes - Dead Rising, Lost Planet, Devil May Cry 4 and a bunch of XBLA releases. Other Japanese developers/publishers are saying they realize this is something they have to do, but no one has been as successful as Capcom at actually delivering.
I think you'll be disappointed by the sales of Resident Evil 5 in the U.S. This demo is probably going to have the unintended effect of turning 360 users, in fact, all non-dedicated fans of the Resident Evil franchise away from the game. I've been hearing a lot of complaints about the inability to run and shoot at the same time and a cumbersome inventory system. I guess Capcom has a little more than a month to fix this, but if it isn't fixed, Resident Evil 5 is going to be quite the sales disappointment. I suspect F.E.A.R. 2 will show RE5 what being able to move and shoot can do to sales performance.
That's true. If you not a fan of the Survival Horror genre, or in particular the Resident Evil franchise. You are going to be equally disappointed with this. The point is that Survival Horror isn't supposed to be "Run and Gun" I suggest Left 4 Dead if you just want to shot up zombies. Think of Resident Evil first, as more of an RPG. F.E.A.R 2 as you say is a true FPS, that comes very close to mimicking that atmospherics in a survival horror games Like Resi-Evil or Silient Hill (In my opinion).
I don't think people are going to be confused about what Resident Evil 5 is, given all the games that have gone before, unless you've been living on the moon for two decades.
On last week's Listen Up podcast (the torch bearer for the now deceased 1up Yours) they made an interesting point that RE5 isn't so much a game in the survival horror genre, it's more of an action game. Where you're piling up the body count with not so much to fear, rather than struggling to survive.
Granted, even journalists have only seen a small slice of the game, so the survival horror elements may not have been shown yet. But if what has been shown is a fair indication of what the game's about, would it be so bad to have more action friendly gameplay mechanics?
I haven't tried this yet, so it may not actually be in the demo, but I saw on the RE4 Inside Xbox feature that there is an "action control" option which mimics Gears of War control scheme so you can move and shoot at the same time and not have to re-learn the controls.
You should check again, especially here.
But then again, Capcom has a month to fix these issues.
I loved RE4 and think the control scheme kinda fit the game. It is kinda a bummer to not be able to walk/run and shoot, but at least there's finally a straffe option in there. I was a bit turned off by the demo due to the controls, but I think after playing the game for a while that I'd get used to it again (that's if I even buy it). I do think though that on name alone this title will sell well. 2 million worldwide eventually at a slwo trickle? That could happen, sometimes it's hard to guess those types of things.
That would be nice if there were a move while you shoot option, that would help a lot I think.
