US-based social game company Zynga has acquired the studio behind the Games With Friends mobile game franchise, Newtoy, for an undisclosed figure.
Newtoy was founded in 2008 by previous employees of Microsoft’s Ensemble Studios, Paul and David Bettner, who had worked on Halo Wars and the Age Of Empires series.
As part of its Games With Friends series, which are dedicated to multiplayer mobile gaming, Newtoy has released Chess With Friends and Words With Friends on iOS devices. The studio will be renamed Zynga With Friends as part of the new deal.
Mark Pincus, founder and CEO of Zynga said: “The Games With Friends franchise is the best social game experience available on mobile today”.
"We're reinventing the way people are social on their mobile devices," said Paul Bettner, who takes the role of VP and GM of the newly branded studio. "The Zynga With Friends Studio will build on the Newtoy legacy of creating approachable, highly social games that are accessible to anyone from anywhere."
The acquisition comes following a year of expansion for Zynga, which recently saw the company’s games launched on the Yahoo! platform.
