Nice idea, does seem thought that polarizing things into positive and negative is a little forced. I’m not sure if I could I identify half of the articles I read either way.
@AaronMC I get your general point. I think its true that to assume everyone who accumulated a pirated copy would have bought it at retail is over simplistic. But at the same time it seems that for you to say that there’s “a net gain” is making the same assumption but in the other direction. The games that are most pirated are likely to also be the most popular, so they will likely have high sales as well as high piracy levels. The truth is there is no way of telling how many sales have been ‘lost’ as a result of piracy.
When you look at a game like Spores, where it was downloaded half a million times on bit torrent you’d have a hard job convincing EA that that is was good thing, for that reason is harms publishers confidence in a platform and therefore negatively effects the platform as a whole.
I never understand this, the only time you ever see a long thread on the Edge site is when people are bitching about a review. Like quietIdentity said, there are so many other sites that give more descriptive analysis so why come here just to moan? If you actually read the magazine the reviews really aren't that much of a focus.
I don’t think Sony are really competing with Nintendo, it’s a different user base, they’re competing with MS. And I actually think this might stimulate sales a fair amount. Also, the new ads that they’re going to run have much better general appeal. It may all still all be a little late but they’ll be more aggressive and focused from now on and I think sales should reflect that. I guess time will tell…
If games and movies don't develop some mutual respect, all we can expect are films that are really bad action games and games that are really bad films, says Steven Poole.
