well, i usually don't follow the business side of gaming. as a gamer, the only difference i've noticed between Playstation this generation and the two previous generations is the lack of exclusive third-party content. Sony's studios still churn out quality games that are usually second to none (save maybe Nintendo), and in that regard i hope they continue as they always have. i see revenue and profit (or lack thereof) as more of a determining factor of continued in-house development than winning by install base, so to me it makes little difference who's in first, second or third place.

for Microsoft it's cool that they've made a name for themselves in the gaming sector (i'll stop short of givig them kudos due to the whole RRoD fiasco) , but a huge part of me thinks this was at the expensive of not building a quality in-house development portfolio, which is all the more a necessity in a level industry where third-parties can't really afford to go the exclusive route anymore. the only thing that distinguishes the 360 from the PS3 now is Live; that might be enough for some, but for me it's not, not when PS3 has it own (albeit, slightly inferior) network that's free.

well, my apologies if i came across a bit combative. with fanboy wars being rampant on many forums, it's often hard to discern geniune reason from blather, which i mistook your post for. like you i encourage quality, and i generally do this by buying quality (games) for both the PS360. that's certainly not the only way to encourage quality though, and, again, not buying a good game due to a tight wallet or a poor cost/value ratio is understandable.

there are still a few points you're arguing that i totally disagree with (such as Sony, and conversely Microsoft, losing their first-party support), but we'll leave them be.

i wasn't trying to start a console war; likewise, i wish there wasn't such a thing either. the reason i asked the question is because you said quality games deserve support, but you don't own a PS3 which has quality exclusives that NEED support. Valkyria Chronicles, Demon's Souls, even LBP and the first Uncharted, inFamous and KZ2; these are just a few critically acclaimed games that either barely sold decent or shamefully sold very poorly. even MGS4, the highest selling PS3 exclusive to date, only managed 4 million, and it's one of the highest rated games this generaion, only eclipsed by GTAIV and two other PS3 exclusives (LBP and Uncharted 2).

now, if it's all down to personal preference and most of the listed games above don't appeal to you (at least not enough to shell out $300), then i certainly understand. but it's rather hypocritical to claim quality deserves support while in the same breath not supporting a potentially quality game that you've never even invested time in playing.
