I don't think that developers feel forced to put the achievements/trophies in their games, also saying that is only an after thought.
Many gamers play their games not only to have a good old time but to test their skills, achievements provide that kind of satisfaction, if a player doesn't care about them fine it won't stop you from finishing the game and no harm is done. Just as you pointed out by saying:
"Oh crap. We forgot the achievements. What pointless tasks can we have players perform to get the points?"
I think developers will be more inclined to the achievements because: "Ok we just finished that the combo system and is working just fine, the obstacle course is done too and it looks and plays really cool. Now how can we get gamers to try their skills and keep playing our game a little longer after simply finishing it? Well we can add some achievements if they make a 50 hit combo, and we can get another one if they finish the obstacle curse in under the regular 2 minutes... how about 1:30? is it too hard or is a good enough challenge?? You get idea.
Developers are in no way complaining since the very nature of the achievements provides an extra incentive for gamers to play the games they invested so much time making. If people doesn't like them they will be long gone with the first Xbox 360 games but because gamer DO like the extra incentive now Sony is using them too. And most importantly it doesn't affect the gameplay at all, if you don't want to be doing random task just for points then don't do them and finish the game. To me its better to have them and don't need them than need them and don't having them.
Lets just put an example here: If the father of someone is murdered by a burglar using a hammer and then you see a movie where one of the characters dad gets killed by a burglar using a hammer, won't that bring you bad and sad memories? I mean is not your dad is not the same city and they probably won't show the dead body in the movie, you know what I mean?
We all know its a mature rated game and all, but companies have a social responsibility and more importantly a public image, nobody is forcing them to censor it but they do it out of respect and sensitivity for something that means a lot to not all but many Japanese people. I can't really speak on the COD4 subject but I thing the way it was handled, showing how bad a war is and the way they presented the nuclear detonation is a little different from Fallout 3 plus the name of the bomb itself was a clear reference to the ones used in Japan. PLUS its basically a side quest and one of the characters detonates the bomb as far as I know. So I'm guessing it wasn't as important to the story as it was on COD4.
Just take into account that Japan is not forcing these changes on Bethesda and that they are doing it by themselves cause, as the article points out it was considered "inappropriate".
If I remember correctly one of LBP adds revolved around God of War and how you can play in level based on the game. I don't understand why now Sony is making a big deal on people designing a God of War level, I can understand levels based on Mario and others companies IP but as far as I can see it having a God of War level will be good publicity and will remind people of the upcoming GoW 3.
Awesome, being from Mexico this kind of action are what we need to become a bigger and more important market in the video game industry. I believe we are in the top 10 already and for what I read video game sales in Mexico will close near the billion mark by 2010 or earlier.
I think Germany acknowledges that something shitty happened and because of that they don't want to have any of it anymore. People know about it, they learn it at school and know is a terrible thing of their history so that's why is forbidden in the country. Whats the point on telling the people in Germany how terrible it was and then let you buy Nazi memorabilia? It doesn't make sense at all in my humble opinion.
Japan is the only country in the world that was bombed not one but twice by a nuke, its not about them not able to handle the full game at all but only that part of the game where you use a nuke, if you can't really understand why they have to change it I don't think I can explain it any simpler. The guys at Bethesda understand that it is a sensitive subject and its not about "them" not getting their game.
Tomb Raider Underworld producer Eric Lindstrom talks about Lara Croft’s essential personality traits, and why they’ve helped her survive all these years.
