Haven't most mature games aimed at the hardcore market on the Wii failed to sell? Mad World up until August this year has managed 123,000 units since it's release. (Gamasutra) Sin & Punishment 2 sold 5,600 copies on it's first day in Japan. So for all this talk of a 22-million installed user base, it's a shame that these games aren't selling better. Perhaps what the core gamers mean when they want hardcore games, is that they want hardcore games by Nintendo since they don't seem to be buying these other titles.
I agree with both @Poffle and @Alex_V, it'll be such a shame for them to stop innovating. In my eyes they'd really turned things around and became exciting again. It's sad to see so many more people lose jobs.
I've given up hope to find something on terrestrial television and look online instead, The 1UP Show which has now become CO-OP on Revision 3 as well as a few other video podcasts fulfil my video gaming appetite. (Link: http://revision3.com/coop)

I suppose that seems pretty fair as long as they don't cause problems from legitimate consumers, which I'm certain will unfortunately arise.
