The Germans do not pretend WWII never happened, in fact the younger German generations still live with the shame even though they are as far removed from the events that happened as you and I are. Their "strange" laws may be over compensating but it's their way of trying to make sure it never happens again (and to be seen as doing so in the eyes of the rest of the world) and not just a vain attempt to ignore the past.
Maybe it is the rest of us with our zombie/ psychic/ Nazi obsession that have lost sight of the real issues the last world war should have taught us.
just because a new market is created doesn't mean an older more established market suddenly dies, and if we do ever get to the point when no-one wants to play a 2D platformer (not in my lifetime i hope!) then what would be the point in holding onto the past for nostalgias sake alone?
Games will never die even if the industry does, just like music there will always be artists that wish to create, for money, love or for the luckily few, both!
It's not like the world's second ever car manufacturer felt like they had to make vehicles with 7 wheels just to avoid feeling like tea-leafs. If it works, then why change it? If you think your customers would use it, why not let them have it?
I'd say true innovation is very rare and that most things you make use of everyday are a result of many tweaks over many years
