Super Mario: Realizing that the ability to break out the bricks and walk up by the score, breaking the fourth wall effectively, wasn't an accident when you get to the
secret pipes room. Amazing. Totally changed my perception of what games could be.

Guantlet: The first time you hear, "Elf needs food badly" and feeling very invested, not just from a scoring standpoint, to keep him alive.
