Personally, I'm feeling ok with gamepad. I don't want any disturbance between screen and me. That is why I'm turning off vibration. Stationary gaming and gamepads are the way to go. And by gaming I mean art/emotions/immersion experience.
My speakers are alright. It depends on the game, though. I'm playing Resistance now and steps there sound right. At least in terms of positioning. Not unlike Rainbow 6 Vegas or Condemned.
Maybe it's just me, but steps coming from the front speakers are sound like they are mine. From the rear - not. It's more complex than that(rear or front) of course.
Footsteps in games are awful. They just don't sound right. I always think that's it's not mine, but enemy's. And they frequently come from the rear which also isn't right. I'm talking about FPSs of course.
It seems that SotC wasn't able to provide a great desire to kill those monsters. At least for Steven. After all, hero(you) was killing them to save the loved one. Perhaps, by having some kind of flashbacks(dreams) where she's still alive, would have changed that for Steven and he'll be eager to continue this killing.
I knew I was going further into darkness by killing them, but I didn't care - I was saving my love from death.

But, I had never tried playing Wii.
What about Chronicles Of Riddick? They game was released along the movie and was great. Don't know though, when it was planned...
