Everything is just a rental. New technology does not equal good, just new technology. Usually when corporations and government figure out a new technology that will allow them to have more control over their customers or citizens they are going to use it, especially when it doesn't seem so obvious. With this you are just bending over to whatever the corporation says, and you have no choice. If you don't like it you can't just stop because you lose all that software, and all your information.
